THE MONTHLY REVIEW.
We have received a copy of the Monthly Review for August, and are glad to be able to praise the undoubted improvement that has taken place in its matter since the proprietorship has changed hands. The front page contains an able article upon “ The Schoolmaster,” and although we do not agree with the writer when he paints the wornout teacher with proverbial threadbare coat and “ lean care-wrin-kled face,” we are of opinion that the position of the schoolmaster is by no means what it should be, and should be glad to see a pension granted to teachers of long service, as suggested in the Revicio. The abolition of provinces will, we trust, bring the schoolmaster nearer to a reward of the kind. Under the heading of “ Dr. Birch,” the history of flogging in some of the Home public schools is amusingly given, and would prove instructive reading to colonial parents, who are rather roughly handled by the friend and biographer of the learned doctor. “ The Mormons” still holds a prominent place in the monthly, and will, when completed, form an interesting history of an extraordinary people. The second of a series of lectures (which are intended for school use) is upon the utility of glass, and bristles with dates. The advertisement columns are well filled, and afford proof of the growing popularity of the periodical, which has, we think, a prosperous career before it.
