IMMIGRATION OF DISCHARGED SOLDIERS.

A statement which calls for investigation was made at the meeting of the Immigrants’ Aid Society committee, Melbourne, reports the Telegraph :—“ It was alleged that when soldiers were discharged from the Indian army they had the option of receiving a free passage to their birthplace, or any other part of her Majesty’s dominions to which they might choose to go, and that, in addition, they received orders on the commissariat establishment at the place of their destination for a small gratuity. A good many privates who have left the army through sickness, or other causes, have elected to come to Australia; and as the poor fellows have, on landing, neither money nor trades, while they have been totally unaccustomed to manual labor, it is not surprising that, failing, as they usually do, to obtain work, they are forced often to apply for relief at charitable institutions. To make matters worse, they find that they have no means of obtaining payment of the gratuity order, which, relying from force of habit on the word of their officers, they were induced to think equivalent to hard cash. Several discharged soldiers, one of whom complained of the non-payment of his gratuity, applied for relief at the Home yesterday. It is pitiful to see men whose best years have been devoted to the service of their country wandering about in a destitute condition.
