CITY COUNCIL.

Thursday, August 5. A meeting of the Council was held in the Provincial Chambers at 4 o’clock. Present— The Mayor, Councillors Drausfield, Greenfield, Gillon, Kainie, Clelaud, Pharazyu, Moss, and Mills. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Copies were read of all correspondence issued from the office since the previous meeting. Also the following inward correspondence;—Prom the honorary secretary of the Metropolitan Railway Extension League (Sydney), re railway facilities in Wellington ; from Henry Anderson ; from the Town Clerk of Nelson, inclosing account for waterpipes (£315); from Mr. Allan, for the mouth of August, claiming £l3, damages to a cart. REPORT. The report of the Public Works Committee, of 3rd August, was read and adopted. RECLAIMED LAND. The Mayor informed the Council that he had written to Messrs. Turnbull and Co., accepting their offer of £7OOO as the purchasemoney for a section of reclaimed land, ‘and instructed solicitors to make out the abstract of title. MEETING CONVENED.

Councillor Duanseield proposed that a meeting of the Council be summoned for the purpose of taking into consideration some important Bills that are now before Parliament. The Mayok said it was most important that such a meeting should he held, as it was within his own personal knowledge that the Government were now considering the advisability of conferring upon municipal corporations the power of borrowing money. The Council unanimously agreed that a meeting for the purpose should be held on Monday next. NOTICE OP MOTION. Mr. Phauazyn gave notice that he intended to move at the next meeting of the Council, — That a Committee be appointed to inquire into the ways and means of the Council, and for the purpose of initiating further economical measures. The Council adjourned till next Monday.
