Arrived: The barque Lochnagar from Newcastle, after a smart passage of seven days. She reports the ship Columbus, bound from Newcastle to Hongkong, with 800 tons of coal, wrecked in Torres Strait. Six men were left without provisions or water on an. island. Seventeen Chinamen remained on the wreck. A schooner picked up a boat with ten of her. men, who reported the wreck.—The Helen White has arrived from Adelaide with a cargo of flour. LYTTELTON, Tuesday. Arrived ; The Dido, from Blenheim; Sarah and Mary, from Greymonth ; Ladv Don, from Hokitika. SATT.vn : Island City, for Newcastle; Strathnavar, for Wellington. TARANAKI, Tuesday. The Herald's special reporter interviewed Hunt, of the cutter Hero. Hunt says he is a nephew of Captain Fairchild, and was cabin-boy in the Luna, but ran away. He is seventeen years old. Heavy rollers set in from the beach, which frightened the master. During the night, owing to the starting of a plank in Her port side, the vessel labored and made water. The pumps were kept at work. The captain resolved to go for Mokau. Shook out reef from mainsail, but no sooner done so than the mast They took to the boat, and the first surf capsized it. Hunt swam ashore. He saw the captain on top of the boat; but he was washed off. Saw the men struggling in the water.

The Time-ball may be need to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 12h. 30m. when the ball drops. Any difference will be error, plus or minus, of the chrono meter. The s.s. Star of the South left Auckland at 5 p.m. on the 22nd inst.; arrived at Napier on the 25th ; left at 11 o’clock next morning, and reached 'Wellington at 7 p.m. yesterday. Experienced fine weather and light fair winds during the whole of the passage. The s.s. Ladvbird arrived at an early hour yesterday morning from the North. The purser reports as follows :—LeftManukau at 1.30 p.m. on the 24th inst., arriving at Taranaki at six next morning; sailed at 10 a,m. same day, reaching Nelson at 0.30 a.m. on the 2Cth. Left at 1.15 p.m., and arrived at Picton at 10 p.m. same night; sailed at 1 a.m. on the 27th, reaching Wellington at 7 a.m. same morning. Experienced light winds and fine weather to Nelson, from thence light winds, with thick weather. The schooner Hunter arrived yesterday morning from IJotueka. She left that port on Sunday morning at two o’clock. Experienced light S.W. winds until four o’clock the same evening. Met with a series of calms until rounding Stephen's Island, which was done at 7 a.m. on the 26th. Had strong N.E. winds until reaching the Heads. The brig Neptune, from Newcastle, came into the harbor at a late hour on Tuesday night, having left Newcastle on the 17th inst. at G p.m. Met with strong westerly winds for the first three days. Experienced a severe S.W. gale on the 20th, which staved in part of the handrails, and covered the decks with water for twelve hours. Sighted f’.ocky Point on the morning of the 24th inst.; anchored inside the Heads on the 2Cth, as there was a calm, and reached the wharf at 4 a.m. on the 27th. The p.s. Lyttelton left last night for Blenheim. The new steamer Kiwi was towed by the p.s. Manawatu to the Patent Slip last night at eight o’clock, where she will be prepared for service. The dull weather we have had for the last two or three days cleared up towards noon yesterday. There was a light southerly breeze all day. The weather appears to be much the same all over the colony. In the South the glass had fallen a little. The s.s. Star of the South it will be noticed, sails for Lyttelton and Dunedin, at noon to-day.
