ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA.
ARRIVAL OF THE LLEWELLYN. A portion of the following was published by us in a Second Edition yesterday : Auckland, Friday. This fine new vessel, belonging to the Auckland Steamship Company, arrived at Auckland to-day, bringing later English and Australian items, which we annex. The Llewellyn is intended for the New Zealand and Fiji trade, instead of the Star of the South. She is of the same class of ship as the Hawea and Taupo, and will be an acquisition to our colonial shipping trade. ENGLISH NEWS. London, July 11. The French National Assembly, by 335 votes against 310, annulled the election of M. Bourgoing, Bonapartist representative of the department of the Nievre. The official statement of the Turkish budget shows a deficit of four million. Madrid, July 11. The Carlists are being closely pursued by Alfonsist troops. AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. Sydney, July 16. The Sydney Morniw Herald understands that since the mail contract was signed, some difficulty has arisen from the fact that the solicitors of the American Company have expressed doubts as to the power of the directors, under their charter, to enter into a joint contract with other parties. The English solicitors do not appear to see any difficulty in the matter, but a plan has been proposed for getting over the difficulty, which is not considered very formidable. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly has agreed to the Legislative Council’s amendments in the Marriage with Deceased Wife’s Sister Bill, so that the measure now only awaits the Governor’s assent to become law. The price paid Joshua Brothers for their sugar works, including twenty cargoes of sugar, is .€500,000. The committee of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce acquiesced in the proposal of the Brisbane Chamber for a conference on intercolonial reciprocity, and suggest Melbourne, or Sydney if more convenient, for the meeting. An entertainment is to be given at Sydney for the benefit of the sufferers by the recent floods in South France. The German Glee Club offered the first aid. New Tariff proposals have been made in the Victorian Parliament. The Government propose to levy a land tax so that the wealthy might contribute their fair share. They fix the tax as follows :—All owners of laud to the extent of 321 acres to 2000 acres, pay fourpence per acre per annum ; 2000 acres and upwards, sixpence per acre. Holders of land under 320 acres to be exempt. This tax will produce £150,000. It is also proposed to tax house property. All under the value of £75 to be exempt; value £l6O, sixpence in the pound; over £l5O, ninepenoe. To be levied on owners, not upon the tenants. This tax is estimated will produce £50,000. It is also proposed to levy duty on banks of twopence per cent, on notes in circulation. Stamp duties to be increased, and a tax levied on absentee holders of property to the amount of 21 per cent., and to place a tax of five per cent, on all incomes from business not otherwise axed. Government propose to remit Customs duties to the extent of £230,000. Tlie Treasurer proposes that the £200,000 set apart from land revenue for three years, for the construction of railways, should be used for the erection of schools. He intends to ask Parliament to borrow £2,330,000 from the London market, for the construction of railways and other public works. The total amount of new taxes proposed will be £517,000. The New South Wales Government intend to recommend the validation of the contract made by Sir Daniel Cooper and Mr. Russell for the San Francisco fork service via Fiji. ADDITIONAL AUSTRALIAN NEWS PER S.S. LLEWELLYN. Sydney, July IC. The resolution in the Assembly for the adoption of the Pacific Mai! Contract has been postponed for a week. New Zealand advices relative to the bank arrangement gives an improved position to bank shares here. A statement received from Tindall leaves no room" for doubt that the remains found on the Liverpool Ranges are those of the missinghorse Blair Athol. Richard Lewis, the Sydney miller, has failed. Liabilities, £37,000 ; assets, £21,000. The City Bank dividend is 8 per cent. Melbourne, July 16. Dr. Robertson, of the Kew Asylum, has promised to substantiate his statements of nndiA influence being used by members of Parliament in securing appointments in the public service. Cavenagh has been re-committed for trial for forging the name of Alfred George Warren to a consent to marriage. His young wife was removed from the court in a fainting condition. Petitions protesting against the Education Act were signed at the Catholic churches on Sunday. Government decline to make any sectarian difference in the classification of children in the Industrial School. Government intend dealing further with the case of Judge Dunne. Luke’s estate has been assigned to a brewing firm; they return liabilities £9OOO. The steamer Ceylon got off uninjured. Queensland sugars sold at 10s. to 20a. advance. Large sales of oilmen’s stores. 3500 cases kerosene sold privately at a decline. Wheat firm, ss. 5d.; same price refused for Australasian at auction. Foochow advices state two steamers are loading tea for Australia ; there will be no further departures. Tea market quiet. Brisbane, July 16. R. Sparrow, bonded warehouseman, has been arrested, charged with feloniously uttering lookers’ orders, and thereby defrauding the Customs.
