WELLINGTON AND MASTERTON RAILWAY.

♦_ . TO THE EDITOK OP TIIIS NEW ZEALAND TIMES, Sir, —Your correspondent "Groytown" lias ingeniously kept in the shade tho destruction of property in Groytown causod by tho floods in the VTVtiohlno River. Surely your correspondent must know that if a lino of railway was in existence in clOße proximity to this doomed town all tho up country fcrafilc would be cut off from communication with Wellington during the periods the railway would bo undergoing repair. This appears to mo rather selfish on his part, for if he could only have hia goods brought nearer to Greytown without having to pay further cartage, and his property more enhanced in value by a nearer line, his object would be attained, and tho up-country settlers from Groytown to the Forty-mile Bush mightholp themselves tho best way they could. I feel satisfied, however, that the Government is getting tirod of this claptrap on tho part of interested parties. Mr. Eochford was a stranger in tho district at tho timo he mado a survey of the lino, and had no private interest to serve, and I believe he faithfully carriod out the instructions of the Government, for no bettor site for a bridge across this dangerous liver could be selected than that already surveyed by Mr. Uochford. As to bringing tlio railway to every man's door, it is a serious question of pounds, shillings, and pence, which not one could reasonably eipeot will bo, carried out.— lam, &0., ' Railway.
