She encountered a terrific S.W. gale on the night of the 11th inst.; hoveto for twelve hours, during which time the whole of the squaresails, which were furled, were blown away. Captain Brown describes the gale as the most furious he has encountered during the last twenty-four years. A strong S.W. gale still prevails here. Moderate N. W, winds, with clear sky, prevailed up to 3 30 p.m. yesterdav, at which hour the wind veered round to the south.* Shortly after 5 o’clock it came on to rain, and continued to do so during the evening. The barometer fell steadily over the whole of the North Island, and a westerly gale was blowing at Tauranga and Hokianga. A S.W. gale had set in on the west coast or the Middle Island. At Lyttelton, ‘ the barometer rose during yesterday afternoon, accompanied by an appearance of S.E. weather. There was a very heavy sea running at the Manukau Heads, and the bar was reported as still very bad for vessels to cross. , A . Mr Jackson, stevedore, commenced to discharge the barque William Fruing yesterday. The two imported short-horn bulls created a great deal of attention, and we have no doubt will prove a valuable addition to the breeding stock of the province. We believe they cost about £l5O each. A diver was engaged yesterday in searching for the whereabouts of a quantity ,of railway material, dropped overboard from the s.s. Phoebe about two years ago. The s.s. Hawea, which left the Queen’s wharf at 12.30 p.m. on the 13th inst., arrived at Lyttelton at 3.30 a.m. yesterday. She arrived half an hour after the s.s. Captain Dalton reports leaving for IVaipapa on the 29th ult., arriving there the next day. After discharging four boat-loads of cargo, they were obliged to desist owing to a strong N.N.E. gale. Bad weather continuing, they had to put to sea, and were knocking about the coast for eight days. The Ruby ran back to Waipapa four times, but Captain Dalton was only able’ to take in a portion of a cargo of wool shipped for this port. Provisions and water running short. Caplain Dalton decided upon making for Wellington. The weather was so bad that the Ruby put into Port Underwood, and had to take shelter under Cape Campbell on two occasions. The captain of the Isabella, whaler, boarded the Ruby about fifteen miles to the northward of Cape Campbell. He reported that they had killed a whale on Sunday last, but that the whale sank. The Ruby will load for the Kaikouras.

She left the wharf with a light N.W. breeze, but before she had reached Haslwell Point the wind veered round to the southward. The schooner Saucy Lass cleared out for Pelorus Sound yesterday. The brigantine Sarah Pile, which cleared outwards for Pelorus Sound the other day, has altered her destination. She proceeds on the first favorable opportunity to the Kaipara.
