BY TELEGRAPH. LYTTELTON, Monday. Arrived ; Maori, from South.; Onward and Re--ward, from Picton; Tawera, from Kaipara; Lyttelton, from Kaikouras ; Julia Pryce, from Thames; and Flirt, from Auckland _ Sailed : Maori, for Nelson ; Alarm, for Newcastle; Southern Cross, for Hoharton; and Esther, for Greymouth. POET CHALMERS, Monday. A strong south-west gale, sccompanied by terrific hail and rain squalls, has prevailed doting the last twenty-four hours. The Taupo has sailed for Northern ports with twenty-four saloon passengers. 7.30 p.m. The Taupo-took the lee bank of the cross channel in Port Chalmers harbor, and is not likely to get off till next tide. The Time-ball may be used to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 19b- 30m. when the ball drops. Any difference would be error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. The weather hag been very fine the last few days, varied, however, about mid-day with sharp squalls. Yesterdays 'W.S.W. squall passed overtUe city, accompanied by a severe hailstorm. The storm soon passed off, bnt the wind still continued to blow strong from the S.W., and there was every indication last night of a heavy gale from that quarter. Reports reach us to the effect that strong winds were prevalent throughout the colony yesterday. Since writing the above we have to add a few more particulars regarding the weather. The wind, which had been blowing strongly from the S.W., veered round to, the, S. shortly after seven o’clock last evening, and by midnight it blew a perfect tornado. ' "We hear that the s.s. Ladybird, which left the wharf abont 6 p.ro. for the South, had to anchor at the Heads, being unable to face the gale. The Hawea had not left the wharf at midnight, as it was Captain "Wheeler’s intention of waiting a few hours to see if the weather moderated. The night was beautifully fine and dear, bnt we fear ' that tidings will be received of considerable damage having been done all over the colony. The sea at times made clean breaches over the wharf, bnt the different vessels alongside the Queen’s Wharf appeared to have made things snug and secure for the night. Per telegraphic advices received .yesterday_ from Roxburgh, we learn that & perfect hurricane is blowing at that The immigrant ship Lammerahagen was admitted to pratique yesterday by the Health Officer. About 120 of her immigrants are for the West Coast and Taranaki. They will be forwarded by the Government to their respectivejdestinations, pers-s. Wellington, this day. The Lammexshagen has only about 150 tons of cargo for this port. As soon as she has discharged her, inward freight she will sail for one of the Polynesian Islands. The Union Steam Ship Compan/s s.s. Hawea arrived here from the North, via Nelson, at 1.30 a.m. yesterday. She left Onehnnga wharf on Wednesday, 7th July, at 1-20 p.m., with a gale blowing from the S.E.steamed to the Heads, but was signalled to anchor; anchored under South Head, the bar being then very rough. On Friday the barwas safe: crossed at 12.30 p.m.; experienced heavy sea to Taranaki, where she arrived on Saturday morning ; left at 10.45 a.m.; encountered strong southerly winds; passed Farewell Spit lighthouse at 10 p.m.., and arrived at Nelson at L3O a.m. Left at 1 p.m. on Sunday; passed through the French Pass at 3.45 p.m., and arrived at Picton at 7.30 p.m. Left again at.8:45 p.m., and arrived as above. We are glad to notice that Captain "Wheeler Is again at his post In the ship, having joined her at-Nelson. We have to thank Mr. Ponsonby, her purser, for report and files. The 8 8. Ladybird, Captain Andrew, left Onehunga wharf at 1 p.m. on the 9th, and arrived at Tarmaki at 8 a.m: on the 10th. Sailed again at 1 p.m. same day, arriving at Nelson anchorage at 7 a.m, on the 11th; came alongside the wharf at noon. Left at 1.30 p.m., arriving at Pictbif at 9.15 p.m. Sailed from Picton at 1 a.m. on the 12th, and arrived alongside the s.s. Wellington at 7 a.m. yesterday. Experienced strong W.S.W, winds from Manukau to Nelson, with heavy cross sea. From there to arrival, fine weather. The s.s. Wellington was detained until this morning, as she has been chartered to convey about 120 immigrants, ex Lamnaershageu. She leaves the wharf atilO o’clock sharp, and will proceed to the ship Lammershagen for the purpose of embarking the immigrants. The collier steamer-Easby took her departure for Sydney and Newcastle shortly after 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The Easby took a very small cargo and several passengers. The schooner Spray arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, with a cargo of grain and produce. The barque Lady Franklin cleared outwards yesterday for Melbourne, via Kaipara. She proceeds to Kaipara, where she will load timber for Melbourne. The s.s. Rangatira took her departure for East Coast ports last evening, -with a large general cargo and a number of passengers. The Bank of New South Wales shipped per Easby, for Sydney, twenty-four boxes of sovereigns, value, £120,000.
