She left Newcastle on Saturday the 6th ult • experienced northerly winds and unsettled weather with lightning *md a falling barometer till Sum V <ae 28th; the wind -then veered into the g gw', increasing in force, and by midnight reduced lo the two closed-reef topsails ; at 1 a.m. next day, took in fore topsail and hove the ship to under the lee clew of the maintopsail. By this time the wind blew with almost hurricane force, the sea making clean breaches over the ship; at 8 a.m. same- day, a tremendous sea struck the vessel, starting all the starboard and washing everything movable overboard. Towards noon the gale was at its height, at midnight the gale decreasing a little; at 9 a.m. on the 30th, a tremendous sea broke on board, staving the best boat, and breaking the fore and after skids which she was lying on. The gale moderated at. 4 p.m.; set the foretopsaii and foresail, and bore up, steering eastward, the wind blowing from the S.S.W., which continued till the 2nd, veering into the S.S., accompanied by squally and rainy weather. On the 3rd, the wind shifted to the N.E. up to the morning of the 4th, when the wind backed again to the S.E., blowing a gale, with a nasty cross-sea; at 8 p.m. the wind chopped round to the S.S.W. again, continuing until making Cape Farewell at noon on the 6th ; from thence until arrival experienced strong head winds.
