Wednesday, July 7. (Before Captain Holt and K. J. Duncan, Esqs. J.P.’s). DRUNKENNESS. William Gotoche was fined 55,, or in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. RESISTING THE POLICE. Adam Gardiner was charged with being drunk- and resisting the police. Sergeant Monaghan deposed that the accused was creating a great disturbance at the Fakir of Coin’s entertainment on Tuesday night. The prisoner, who seemed to think himself illtreated at having been taken into custody, denied the charge. It transpired that the accused had on the handcuffs all night. The Bench, in

consideration of this, and its being his first offence, fined him ss. with the usual alternative. Prisoner, in leaving the box, remarked “ that he might suffer in this court, but that the constable would suffer in a higher tribunal for the lies he had told.” One of the magistrates on the bench, E. J. Duncan, Esq., who was a witness of the whole affair, stated that the police were perfectly right in taking the accused into custody. WIPE DESERTION. John Pugh was brought up, charged with having deserted his wife, who resides at Christchurch. The accused acknowledged leaving his wife at Christchurch, and said that he had come here to find work. A month previous to his coming here, he had had a separation, and his wife and he had been hying apart for that time. He had told his -wife he was coming to Wellington. Xu reply to a question as to whether he had sent her any money, he said that he had none, as he had only a fortnight’s work, and that there would be about £1 to come from his master. Sergeant Monaghan stated that accused had been discharged from his last place through drunkenness. He applied for a remand until to-morrow tor further information. The prisoner was remanded accordingly.
