E. gale, with heavysea The Taranaki sails at noon this day, carrying the outward San Francisco maiL for transmission to the s s Mikado, which leaves Auckland on the 11th. The 4.5. P. Co.'s Southern Cross left Napier at 3.30 p m on the 3rd, and arrived inside the Heads shortlyafter 1 p-m. on Sunday last, but on rounding Halswell Point, she was obliged to anchor off Somes Island in consequence of the thick weather, it being quite an impossibility to discern the wharf or town lights. Early yesterday morning she dragged her anchor and drifted towards Petone, but she was soon brought up, and came up the harbor and anchored off the outer T. After landing her passengers, &c, she went over to the slip to have her hull cleaned and The barquentine llera hauled alongside the wharf yesterday afternoon, and willcommence discharging, weather permitting, this morning. The topsail schooner Flying Cloud commenced discharging at PHmmer's "Wharf yesterday. The barque Harriet Armitage and the brig Robin Hood took advantage of the lull in the wind yesterday, and beat out, under all plain canvas, against a light S.S.W. breeze. The wind, however, lulled entirely about five o'clock, and it came on to rain steadily. The steamers Wellington and Manawatu were detained until to-day, in consequence of a report that a heavy sea was running outside. The ketch Hunter has cleared outwards for Nelson. The s.s. The wretched and boisterous.weather of Sunday was succeeded by almost a calm yesterday, although the wind blew with unabated force until an early hour. The glass has not risen, and there were indications of a rapid fall last night. Bad weather has been experienced in most parts of the colony, but Nelson, Auckland, and Grahamstown appear to have suffered most from the effects of the late tempestuous weather. Grahamstown in particular was visited with one of the severest gales which have been experienced for the last four years past. The gale set in from the N.E., veering to the N.N.W., Mowing at intervals in frightful squalls ; and at 8 p.m. on Sunday, when the storm "was at its worst, the tide rose to a remarkable height, doing considerable damage. Although the harbor was almost like a mill-pond, a heavy sea was reported to be running outside, and another spell of bad weather may shortly be expected. . The Union Co.'s s.s. Taupo may be expected in port from the South on the 13th. She is advertised to leave for the North, via Nelson, on the following day.
