BY TELEGRAPH

NELSON, Tuesday. _ Arrived : Albion, s.s., from Greymouth. Captain Underwood attempted to bring her in without a pilot, and grounded on the boulder bank, but got off in half an hour without injury. Dunmore, from London, 321 days out. Sailed : Otago, s.s., for Melbourne. LYTTELTON, Tuesday.^ Arrived: Ladybird, s.s., from the South; sails North to-morrow. Easby, s.s., from the North ; sails South to-morrow. Fiery Cross, from Greymouth. Southern Cross, from Hobarton. Sailed: Augusta, for Oamarn; Hawea, s.s., for Wellington, at 5.15 p.ra. Passengers Mrs. Black and child, Misses McConner (2), Mrs. Heath and child. Miss Percy, Messrs. Lewire, Beck, and Wright. The s.s. Taranaki arrived from the North at 2 p.m. yesterday, with a large number of passengers for here. She left Onehunga wharf at 1.30 p.m. on the 20th ; crossed the bar at 3.30 p.m., arriyng at Taranaki at 7 a.m. on the 27th ; lapded a large cargo there, and left at 5 p.m. same day ; arrived off the Boulder Bank at 0 a.m. on the 28th, and came alongside the Nelson wharf at 1 p.m. Sailed again at 2.50 p.m., and made for the French Pass, but owing to the very thick fog Captain Lloyd was obliged to come round Stephens Island. Passed thes.s. Otago off Port Hardy at 9.30 p.m. on the 28th, and shortly afterwards had to stop her engines for three hours in consequence of the thick fog. She then went slow ahead, working with the deep-sea lead until making Jackson's Head ; the fug then cleared off. Arrived at Picton at 8.30 a.m. yesterday, and sailed again at 9 a.m., arriving at the wharf as above. Experienced light north-westerly •winds across the Strait. We have to thank Captain Lloyd for the report of the passage. The Taranaki sailed for the South after a few hours* detention in port, as she has to leave Port Chalmers to her contract time, being the bearer of the next outward San Francisco mail, which leaves Auckland by the s.s. Mikado on the oth proximo. One would imagine that pursers’ duties were so onerous that they could not afford to spare a moment’s time to any other business, save that which strictly appertained to their duties. We are led to •make these remarks in consequence of the difficulty of obtaining ships’ reports from one or two of the pursers in the employ of the N.Z.S.S. Company. Yesterday the Taranaki arrived from the North, and on our reporter going on board and requesting a report of,the * passage, he was informed by the purser that he bad no report to give. This is not the first occasion that a like reply has been given, couched in such curt language, that we consider it our duty to prevent, if possible, a repetition of such conduct on the part of the aforesaid purser. In justice, however, to the other pursers of the N.Z.S.S. Company, we must say that our reporter at all times has received every information that he required. The collier barque Edwin Bassett was signalled at an early hour yesterday, but up to a late hour last night she bad not fetched the harbor. She is fifteen days out from Newcastle, having left on the 14th inst., a few hours before the brig Robin Hood, which arrived on the 24th, and has discharged her cargo of coals and will sail for Newcastle this morning. The ketch Falcon arrived from the Wairau last night. The s.s. Ino arrived from Picton yesterday morning. The s.s. Napier arrived from Foxton yesterday morning. The barque Mary Miller took her departure for Newcastle yesterday morning. The s.s. PUcebe left the wharf at noon yesterday for the North. . :

The p.s. Manawatu and the s.s. Hangatira sailed yesterday afternoon. The Rangatira took a very large cargo for the East Coast, consisting of transhipments and goods free and duty paid. The topsail schooner Mannion sailed last evening for Kaipara, She took a quantity of stores for the Kopuru Sawmill Company.

SHIPBUILDING, 1874. sailino snirs.

The result of tho foregoing is Important. It shows the increase in the number of sailing ships built in 1874 over 1873 to be 119 ships, representing an increase of 11D.3C0 gross tons. The largest sailing ship built during the year was the Stuart Hahnemann, of 2050 tons gross. Looking to the very great increase in the tonnage of sailing ships, there is no room for astonishment at the difficulty of finding sufficient British seamen at tho present time, nor at the Interest now taken in training boys for tho sea service.— Nautical Magazine. ,
