THE WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE MEETING.
BY TELEGBAPB. (from ouk own correspondent.) Wanganui, Tuesday. The steeplechase events at Aramoho were very successful to-day. The weather threatened since the morning, but kept up wonderfully and continued fine throughout. There were a large number of visitors from all the surrounding districts, and the town was quite lively. The betting on both events was considerable, not only in sweeps but direct betting. Isleman was made favorite for the Grand National event of a hundred sovs.. Butcher Boy being second favorite, Gazelle third, Warrengate fourth. There was a very good attendance on thecourse, and plenty of excitement. Before starting, Isleman’s backers were very sanguine; Butcher Boy’s none less; likewise Gazelle. In fact, the number of jumps (thirty) left the race doubtful for all. Warrengate led at the start, followed by Butcher Boy and Whitefoot. The latter baulked out of the race altogether. Gazelle then appeared with the others in front, and the race commenced at a splendid pace. Isleman passed the stand last, eventually making a waiting race. Comet nowhere. After the first round the race continued between Butcher Boy and Gazelle until the last round, when Isleman came up, passed Warrengate, and took the third place, but falling at a jump near home, lost a good chance apparently for the stakes. Butcher Boy and Gazelle had a splendid contest, Butcher Boy winning by about a neck. The applause was immense. Isleman was considered right but for the fall. The Maiden Steeplechase was a splendid race. Seven started. Flora won by several lengths. Barbara second. The sport will be continued to-morrow.
