THE CORPORATION v. JEFFS.

TO THE EDITOR Or TltE NEW ZEALAND TIME 3. Sir.,—Will you kindly oblige mo by inserting this letter In your columns, as I feel that both in justice to my solicitors (Messrs. Hart and Buckley) and also to myself I should be, allowed to correct some errors which have crept into both the published reports of the proceedings of the meeting of the Ratepayers' Association, which was held on Friday evening last. First then, I did not state that Mr. Buckley " hadraisedotherpointswhich I thought converted the case into a burlesque." Neither did I say that I ' " was thunderstruck to hear Mr. Buckley utterly ignore that point and raise a host of trivial technical objections." - Neither did I read any letter to the meeting. Indeed, Sir, I was never thunderstruck, or expressed myself as such, till I read what was supposed to be a correct report of the meeting. Now, if you will allow mo, I will give you a verbatim account of what I said, viz. :—" That with all due respect to our worthy chairman, I thought that going to law with the City .Council was the only alternative left as, and that the point on which I demurred paying was the paying in advance, which was supported by the City Council, by their considering tho advisability of making water rates payable quarterly or half-yearly. Mr. Buckley had, however, taken a broader view of the Act than I had done, and in defending the case had raised many legal points as objections to the rate being paid as domanded. I was sorry that anything had been said about tho Council not proving that I was not a clergyman, as it turned the laugh upon us, and made a burlesque of what seemed otherwise a good case.' Now, take the reports published, and no two are alike, and I maintain that mine is tho correct one.' Vcritatis simplex oratio est.— l am, &<>., C. K. Jeffs.
