CHORAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT.
The above concert, as we mentioned in our last issue, was well attended. The programme, which was an especially good one, had in it several features of marked excellence. The band displayed all the effects of Mr. Curry’s skilful direction, notably in the Maritana selections, portions of which had to be repeated in response to a vociferous encore. Mr. Curry was also loudly applauded for a cornet solo, comprised of selections from Hummer; indeed, the band hit the taste of the audience throughout the first overture from “ Semiramide,” giving abundant-evidence of the competency of the performers to overcome the most difficult complications of such a composer as Rossini. The solos, “0 Fair Dove !” (contralto), and “Go Lovely Rose” (soprano), were sung with exquisite taste and expression. The choruses and concerted pieces, though not so effective as the matters we have noticed, were still got through in a highly creditable manner, so creditable indeed, as coming from amateurs, to disarm criticism. A beautifully played pianoforte solo was warmly appreciated by the audience. The programme, as is customary on these occasions, was brought to a conclusion by the National Anthem.
