Reports passing the barque Southern Cross, from that port to Lyttelton, on the 21st. Sailed: Otago, s.s.. for Melbourne via the AVest Coast ports.
The 3.3. Ladybird, Captain Andrews, arrived at 6 a.m. yesterday, with the inward San Francisco mail. She also brought a large number of passengers for "Wellington, and a general cargo for all ports. She left the Manukau at 10.45 a.m. on the 20th, but was bar-bound at the Heads until 0 a.m. on the 21st, when she proceeded on her voyage, arriving at Taranaki at 9 p.m. same day, having had fresh westerly winds and heavy swell; landed passengers for New Plymouth, but was unable to send cargo ashore owing to the thickness of the weather. Left Taranaki at 1.25 a.m. on the 22nd ; arrived at Nelson roadstead at 5 p.m.," but did not come alongside the wharf until 0 p.m. same night. Sailed from Nelson at 11.30 a.m. on the 23rd ; arrived at Picton at 8 p.m. Left again at 1 a.m. on the 24th, and arrived in harbor as above. Experienced fine weather and variable winds from Nelson. We are indebted to Mr. W. Dougherty, purser, for our report and Northern exchanges. The smart collier brig Kobin Hood, Captain Paton, arrived from Newcastle at 6 a.m. yesterday. She ' made a very f lir run of nine days, fine weather having been experienced throughout the passage. Captain Paton reports leaving Newcastle on the evening of the 14th Inst., and experienced moderate N. and S. winds until arrival. The barque Edwin Bassett left Newcastle three hours before the Robin Hood, but up to the present she has not put in an appearance. On Tuesday morning last a brigantine wa3 sighted by Captain Paton, about 100 miles S.E. of Stephens Island, heading to the northward. The Robin Hood exchanged signals with her, but Captain Paton was unable to make out her name by the commercial code. The brigantine was flying the following numbers :—W.N.S.R. During the Robin Hood's detention at Newcastle, her cabin has been enlarged and the internal fltting3 received several improvements, affording greater conveniences for passenger accommodation. The topsail schooner Jessie Niccoll, Captain Petersen, arrived in these waters from Dunedin, via Oamaru, with a cargo of grain, &c, consigned to Mr. O'Shea. She left Dunedin on the 12th, arriving at Oamaru on the 14th, discharged 300 casks of cement alongside the breakwater; took in cargo of grain, and left Oamaru on the 19th, and experienced fine weather and light airs, northerly airs to the Kaikouras, thence until arrival had light S.E. winds. The Jessie Niccoll was built in 1872, by Mr.- Niccoll, North Shore, Auckland, and was formerly owned by Mr. Wood, of Auckland, who hart her built for yachting purposes. About twelvemonths ago she was purchased by her present owner (Mr. McLean, of Dunedin), who also employed her in yachting excursions. This is her maiden trip as a cargo boat, and whether employed in carrying merchandise, or used for a yacht, she is admirably adapted for either. As usnal with all the crafts sent off the stocks by Mr. Niccoll, she is as perfect a model of a craft a 3 anyone would wish to see or possess. Captain Linklater arrived from Lyttelton yesterday morning by the Wellington. He brought with him a fine photographic view of the Elibank Castle as she now lies high and dry on the Ninety-Mile Beach. When the Elibank Castle was runping ashore during the late southerly gale her captain and crew battened themselves down in the cabin Instead of taking to the rigging, the reason for so doing wa3 that the schooner was of such light draught that at high water she was carried high and dry to where she is at present lying. They were thus enabled to make their exit out of the vessel without any danger. The Elibank Castle does not appear to be ranch injured, judging from the picture. Her cargo was all sold, and was, we believe, little damaged by salt water. She was fully covered by insurance, and has been sold by the. insurance offices for £650. There is not much likelihood of her being floated this season, as tho experiment would be a very hazardous one, on account of the heavy surf that sets in on the Ninety-Mile Beach. If she is ever to be floated, it will have to be accomplished during the prevalence of the N.W. winds. The fore-and-aft" schooner Strathnaver arrived from Lyttelton yesterday morning with a cargo of grain. The Ladybird sailed for the South at i p.m. yesterday. The s.s. Wellington arrived at the wharf at 0 a.m. yesterday from the South. She brought a largo cargo for all ports, and several passengers for Wellington. She sails for the North at noon this day. The p.s. Lyttelton arrived from the Wairau at an early hour yesterday morning. She left Wairau at 3'p.m. on the 23rd, and experienced fine weather on the run across. The regular Blenheim trader Falcon arrived inside the Heads at midnight on Wednesday, and came alongside the wharf at 0 a.m. yesterday. She left Wairau at 4.30 p.m. on tho 23rd, and made a very quick run of seven hours and a half to the Heads, beating the p.s. Lyttelton up to the light by three hours, that vessel having left Wairau at 3 p.m. on the 23rd. The Falcon sailed again for Wairau last night with a general cargo. The s.s. Rangatira sailed last evening for tho East Coast. She took a number of passengers and a largo general cargo. The p.s. Lyttelton sailed last night for Blonhoim with a small cargo. A diver was employed yesterday by the Corporation In searching for the lost moorings, which have broken adrift from the buoy at tho N W. end of the wharf. The schooner Zior sailed last night for navolock in ballast.
