A SUGGESTION.
Sir,—l notice the buoy on the north-west end of the wharf has broken adrift from its moorings, and is at present swinging under the bows of the barque Harriet Annitago, that vessel having only been fastened to it yesterday morning. It is not the first tune that the buoy moorings have broken adrift, and it is not at all improbable that; sooner or later some serions damage will be done to the wharf, and likewise tiie unfortunate vessel that happens to be moored to tht buoys. Some time ago the south-east buoy parted from its moorings, and a lighter was engaged several days sweeping for them. This little job cost the ratepayers about £150; and I have not the slightest doubt that a similar occurrence is likely to happen any day. I would suggest the following remedy, viz., a dolphin should bo fixed at each end of tiie outer T, so that vessels lying alongside could with safety be moored to it. This improvement, if properly effected, would last as long as the wharf itself, and I am quite sure it would not cost more than the sum expended in replacing the old unsafe moorings. My object in thus bringing tiie matter before the public notice is to show how the ratepayers have to pay the “piper," and to prevent, if possible, any future damage to tiie wharf and shipping.—l am, &c., One who Knows.
