THE KINGITES AND THEIR LANDS.

TO THE -EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.. g IR Your telegraphic intelligence of this.morning contains a statement from'the Star correspondent in the King country, that it is the fault of the Govern-; ment that that country is not opencd.anrl that.the Kingites are willing to lease if Crown grants be given for their lands south of the confiscation boundary. I have, on more than one occasion, seen -reports from | the same individual, some of which were not remarkable for their accuracy; and I remember-very well the Echo publishing a very curious account of the manner in which one of-themJiad Jjeen mode...up.. However; I will not raise any question as to the corrospon; dent, or'the veracity of his statement that the Kingites' are willing tos lease, land, j' What I should like to know is how is the Government impeding them ? Perhaps the correspondent in the remote regions of Tokanganvutu is hot aware of the existence of a Native. Land Act; at all events, his ignorance on this subject is - not shared by the natives among whom tie has thrown his lot. •Myuneuhghtencd view is that Kingities, as well as Mendhes, have free access, to. the, Native Land Court;-that-if they only chose they can have their rights examined by it, and through it obtain their titles. And, judging from the course openly and publicly pursued, by, the Government, I should think they would rather rejoice at such a course being adopted. However I am, as I have said, unenlightened, and I shall be obliged if you will kindly inform, me whether any obstacle . really exists to .the Kingites availing themselves with regard to their titles of the same opportunities which the natives have. .It. will, of course be beyond your power to answer the question as to whether there are or are not parties who would like to see the natives obtain titles without the intervention of legal machinory, whiclvmightprevent large tracts of country from passing into the hands ot 'spcculators.-I am, &c, . * AccKl . A sir, "Wellington, June 19. [We do not see any difficulty In the way of Kingite owners getting titles to their lands, if they wish to do so, in the manner suggested by "Auckland, and we quite agree with him in the belief that the Government would be glad if they did apply to the Native Land Court to investigate their claims.—Ed.
