THEATRE ROYAL.
The production of "Pygmalion, and Galatea" at this house last night was a decided triumph for the management. The house was filled by a large and appreciative audience, and the interest which was awakened by the piece ro3e to a great pitch, and at the conclusion of the second act, produced a remarkably enthusiastic call before the curtain of the chief performers. At the end of the third act the curtain had also to be raised in deference to loud and long continued applause. A detailed notice of the piece will appear in our weekly dramatic criticism, but we may say here that Mr. Hoskins and Miss Colville evidently, in the estimation of a Wellington, audience, gained fresh laurels by their personation of the parts they undertook —added fresh fame to their already well-established reputations. Mrs. Hill's Cynisca, too, was a very powerful performance ; and Mr. Booth's Pygmalion was more than satisfactory. A subordinate part, that of Leucippe, was brought into prominence owing to the excellent rendition it received at the hands of Mr. Burford; and another subordinate part, that of Myrine, was dressed and played by Miss Marion Moore with very good taste. We may also mention in terms of praise the part of Daphne, taken by Miss Hettie Howard at a very short notice. The afterpiece of " The Practical Man," in which Mr. Hoskins kept the house in a roar for some forty minutes, concluded an evening's performance in which it may be fairly said that the management has received evidence of a desire on the part of the Wellington public to fully appreciate its efforts to provide them with something novel, and at the same time something good in the dramatic way. "Pygmalion and Galatea" is announced for repetition to-night, and doubtless will have a most successful run.
