(From the Argua, May 29.) In the import markets business has been very quiet, and transactions not of much account. Trade sales to a very moderate extent only reported, the utmost difficulty being experienced in getting the larger buyers to operate. Flour Is steady at our quotations of £lO 17s. 8d- to £ll, but no special sales have reached us. "Wheat is very saleable, but business is 1 restricted by the paucity of supplies in the market. Anything offered meets with a ready sale ; 400 bags were placed this forenoon at ss. Oats are moving , off in fair parcels. We hear of a line of 800 bags good stout milling having been taken up at 4s. Id. Candles are much inquired for, and 10Jd. has been offering freely all day. Kerosene oil eontinues to ! meet with a good deal of favor. Wo hear of a lino of i 2000 cases of diamond oil having changed bands at a , very full price. Teas have not been marked by much activity. By the Brisbane, the Torres Strait mall ( steamer, winch has just arrived, the first shipment of . the new season's teas has come forward, 6000 packages ‘ new “ Yeng-ping I'oo" congou, season 1875-70, being 1 on board, consigned to Messrs. I'. W. Prell and Co. i This shipment is worthy of note as being the earliest arrival of new teas which has ever reached the t colony. CANTERBURY. % (From tho Lyttelton Times of Monday). There is little change in the import trade, sales are entirely confined to the actual requirements of dealers. There was a moderate attendance at the sale of the sugar per Cleopatra from Queensland, on ■■Tuesday ; every line was sold, but at prices that must result in heavy loss to those interested. Tho greater part of the cargo consisted of soft light brown and yellows; these brought from £2l 10s. to £29; two small lots of white realised full values —say £33 10s. and £34 10s.: some numbers have turned out in a sweated state, and will doubtless be re-sold as damaged. Mauritius sugars are very quiet. Brandy has improved in value, and Henncesy’s bulk is inquired for at 9s. 6d., case 325. Cd.: other brands more firmly held. Supplies of case Old Tom have come to hand, and satisfied pressing wants, but stocks are low. Best brands of Scotch whisky move off steadily. Bottled stout is in good request, and favorite brands are very saleable at 11s. 9d. to 12s. on : the spot. Ale remains quiet. Bulk ale is dull; the first lot of the new brew of Bass’ has arrived per Mystery, and will doubtless find reaiy sale. The recent heavy shipments of galvanised iron from Melbourne have met tho immediate wants of trade at up to £4O per ton, and we hear of considerable supplies still coming. £37 10s. to £3S is now the market value of first brands. Cement keeps moving freely, and large sales are being made of parcels to arrive. Kerosene is improving in value, and may be quoted at Is. 6d. to Is. 7d., in bond. Candles are very saleable at ll{d. to lldjd. Tobacco remains quiet, without improvement in value. BY TELEGRAPH, AUCKLAND, Teesday. At a sale of Yarraville sugars to-day bidding was dull. The rates realised were from £2B 10s. to £34 ss. Mr. Alexander Saunders reports Sellers: Bank of New Zealand, 355 s *. ; Fiji Bank, 545. ; National Insurance, 275.; South British, 495. Sales: New Zealand Insurance, 84s ; National Insurance, 265. 6d.; City of London, 60s. Buyers: National Bank, 705.; Loan, 80s.
