WANTED, A PRESS CLUB.

IO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW" ZEALAND TIMES. Sm,—l have wondered sometimes whether I a»i to interpret the occasional notices, by you newspaper men of your neighbors in Wellington, in a Pickwickian sense; or whether you really believe your brothers of the pen to be the eager and unprincipled fault-finders the reckless propagators of scandal and. in a word' tbe thorough cads that—well, perhaps not you* sir—but your compeers are each ready to uro* claim the staff of the rest of the Wellington Press I have lately come from a city where, at least tn mv experience, a little more courtesy, a little less readiness to impute improper motives, is the rule. Perhaps this amenity In Dunedin was partly owing to the existence of a Press Club, in the rooms of which literary men of all the papers could meet, and often met in so much of social intercourse, aud with such interchange of civilities and mutual help, as were compatible with the labors of a newspaper staff. Surely, the Press is strong enough in Wellington to support a similar institution. The expenses would be small, the benefits might not be small. In Dunedin a subscription equal to £3 yearly, pays rent for well-furnished rooms in a good hotel in the centre of the town, and the nucleus of a club library has been formed. The reporter may write out his notes, the contributor his article, without being blackmailed by strangers or paying for drinks that he would sooner throw out of the window. Will you give ns your opinion of the matter in the bsw Zealand Times? Certainly, the kindlier feeling that prevails in Dunedin is somothino to bo desired.—l am, Sc., b K.
