The Time-ball may be used to-day for rating chronometers. A chronometer true on Greenwich time •would show 12h.' 30m. when the ball drops. Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. The powers that be will confer a great boon upon the shipping community in general,' but more particularly on the captains of our numerous coasting fleet, by causing mooring piles to be erected at intervals at the breastwork. At present the captains of our coasters discharging alongside the breastwork,- have to moor their vessels to pieces of wood, an Iron tank, or anything that comes to hand. A very frail kind of fastening indeed. Some fine day, when it is blowing strongly from tho N.W., the different vessels will drag their moorings, and then it is not at.all unlikely that they will hot only carry the pieces of wood to which they are attached, but also carry, along with them a thousand'feet of timber. The p.s. Lyttelton arrived from Blenheim yesterday, having had fine weather on the run across. She left again last night, with a small cargo of exports. ! The s.A Phcebe arrived yesterday at 9.30 a.m., after a very good run of 16} hours from Lyttelton"; fine weather, with light N.W. winds,, being experienced. She left Port Chalmers at 6.30 p.m. on the 17th, and arrived at Lyttelton at 1.30 p.m. on the 18th, having had strong S.W. winds and heavy sea. Left Lyttelton at 4.30 p.m. on the 19th, and arrived at ■ the wharf jit 9.30 a.m. yesterday. The Phcebe brought 104 tons of cargo and 40 passengers for Wellington. We are indebted to the purser, Mr. Barber, for exchanges and other favors. '■■":.■'■.'■,■ The cutter Dido cleared out for Blenheim yesterday, with a general cargo shipped by Messrs. As anticipated, she met the full force of the S.E.-galo, and took shelter at Kaplti Island, and remained there from 10 p.m. on the night of the 19th until 4.30 a.m. yesterday, when she proceeded on her voyage and arrived as above.
