BENEFIT OF MISS MAY HOWARD
The adaptation of East Lynne, by Clifton Taileure, has been expressly written to afford this accomplished actress every opportunity of displaying her remarkable powers of interpreting those finer sentiments with which the play of East Lynne abounds. Those who have seen the play previously performed in this city can form but an inadequate idea of the impression caused by Miss May Howard's performance in this particular piece. Her wonderful acting completely overcame the audience in Melbourne, and was spoken of by the dramatic critics of that city as the most thrilling and powerful dramatic effort ever witnessed on the stage of that city. It is only what would be expected by those who have already had the pleasure of enjoying an evening at the Theatre during the present season, the beauteous form.- and graceful acting of Miss May Howard both assisting to secure that complete triumph which is now the usual and well deserved reward of her performances 'on the stage. The ladies of Wellington have already had their natural curiosity aroused to a pitch of intense excitement, on account of a report that the dresses are from the establishment of a certain nondescript kind of individual, styled a man-milliner (Worth, of Paris)... The report is perfectly true, and .the perfection of elegant costumes, in true Parisian style, is to be seen during the different scenes of this play. From private sources, received from those pai-ts of the colony in which "East Lynne" has been performed, we learn that the effects of the acting and scenic displays are truly wonderful, and such as time alone can dispel. Having said this much, we must leave the rest to the audience to form thenown opinion on. The advertisement to be found in another column will supply additional information on the subject.
