THE THEATRE ROYAL.
This place of amusement was well filled last evening by a respectable and appreciative audience, the bill consisting of “The Wandering Heir.” This drama is admirably suited to the taste of a mixed audience, the leading characters being of such a nature as to afford the artists respectively rendering them ample opportunity of displaying their peculiar powers, whilst the running fire of criticism and humor emanating from the minor characters, and the sensational passages with which the piece abounds, serve to excite and maintain throughout the interest of the whole house. Miss May Howard acquitted herself most satisfactorily; her exposition of the various shades of her complicated dual part demonstrating that her talent is not only brilliant in particular lines, but that she has the power of adapting herself to any character with which she may be entrusted. Mr. Collier as the hero was quite at home, and pleased the audience by his rendition. Mr. J. Thorpe as Richard Aunesley, and Mr. C. Burford as Rowley, the two vagabonds of the piece, will take it as ar compliment to their ability when we say that tbey were cordially hated by the audience before the fall of the curtain. The scenic and mechanical departments are evidently under able direction ; and the various tableaux were effective in the highest degree.
