THE EDWIN FOX.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Captain Davies in his letter this morning states that he had the signal for a pilot flying, and that I boarded him oft Halswell Point. I again assert most positively that the Edwin Pox had no signal whatever flying, and that I boarded the ship oil the pilot station, in ’VVorser Bay. To prove the ship could not have been off Halswell Point, I may state that when the boat left the ship she sailed to the station, which any seafaring man must know could not be done with the wind at south, blowing hard. - I may also state that-it is not my boundeu duty to board a ship unless a signal for a pilot is made. As to the ships coming in without a pilot as stated by “Poneke The Weymouth ran lu during a S.E. gale, when aboat could not live outside. The Langstone arrived about daylight, and I went off as soon as she was signalled, and she had made one tack inside the lighthouse point when I boarded her, the wind light northerly. In the Strathnaver case it was proved in court that I boarded her well outside the reef. The Way arrived early in the morning, with a light S.E. wind, and thick weather. I saw the vessel, and had theboit manned to go off, but as she had no signal for a pilot flying, X did not attempt to board her.—l am, &c., Lancelot Holmes, May 18. Pilot.
