The Wellington left Port Chalmers at 4 p.m. on the 11th, and arrived at Lyttelton at 4 p.m. on the 12th. Left again at C p.m. on the 18th, 1 and arrived here as above. Had a fresh NE. breeze to Lyttelton, and thence to arrival a N.E., to; N,W. gale. The: Wellington brought 34 passengers and a general cargo for Wellington. She will sail for 'Northern ports at noon this day. We have to thank Mr.Wil cocks, purser,, for'files and other favors.,,.. ' The s.s. Egmont arrived from Wanganui last evening. - She left Wanganui at 6 a.m. yesterday, and en countered a strong N.E 1 and NAV. gale until arrival as above. ■ Captain Irvin© states that he has never experienced such a strong gale, the full force of which was felt off Terawitl, to such an extent that it blew soiae of the wire rigging on to the deck. - The result of the negotiations for the purchase of the barque Sunbeam is that Messrs. P. Cunningham and Co.;-after having examined the barque carefully, have bought her for £4550. Since going on the slip her- bottom has been thoroughly cleaned, and she has received two coats of paint and one of composition. Her new owners intend employing her in the intercolonial trade, and they could not have purchased a more suitable vessel in every respect than the Sunbeam. The Easby was unable to discharge the full quantity of coals into the hulk yesterday, and therefore she did not sail at the hour advertised; but she will do so punctually at 2 p.m. tills day. ••The calm of. Thursday was followed by a violent gale from the N.W,, veering to the,. N.E., during the whole of yesterday, accompanied at Intervals by very heavy showers of -rain. At sea, however, to the south of the Strait, it was much worse than in Wellington. The s.s, Wellington encountered the full force of the gale, taking 27 hours to come from Lyttelton. Probably we shall to-day hear tidings of very bad weather from many parts of the colony. The a.s. Wellington brought twenty-nine bags of mails for Wellington via Suez, transferred from the Tararua. . _ • , The schooners Rose of Eden and Reward arrived from Pelorus Sound yesterday, with timber. Both vessels encountered strong S.E. winds, which accounts for their long passages. The p.s. Manawatu left yesterday afternoon for Wanganui, taking several passengers and a small collier barque Anne Melhuish, from Newcastle, after beating about the Strait for nearly eight days against easterly winds, got the wind from the N.W. yesterday morning, and arrived alongside the hulk European about noon. Captain Chadwick reports leaving Newcastle on the 2Gth ultimo, with strong southerly winds and very heavy seas, which lasted until the noon of the Cth inst. r when they sighted Cape Farewell. From the 6th up to midnight of the 13th had baffling winds from the eastward : got the wind from the N.W. yesterday morning, and arrived at the wharf at noon. The Anno Melhuish passed the barque Edwin Bassett off the Heads. The Wreck of the Blbnoaxjira.—The purchaser o! the wreck of the Blencathra—Mr. O. Stevenson—and a party of friends, practically acquainted with shipping generally, left Melbourne last Wednesday In the--steamer ’ Avon, with' the view of examining whether there was any possibility of raising the Blencathra from where she now lies in Currie Harbor. It was found on Inspection.' of 'the starboard side ,of the ship, which was seen distinctly by means of a waterglass, that the vessel had received no damage on that side, with the exception of. from about 12in. to 15iu. Of the fore-foot, which was broken, and had a lean over to the starboard. The port side was also examined as far as practicable. It could not be seen by means of the water-glass, owing to the vessel having a list of a couple of streaks on that side, and, therefore, the diver was sent down. - He reported that the vessel was leaning against a rock, and that there was an indent abaft the main rigging of about Sin. or 4in. wide, and going forward, but he could not saw how far it extended, owing to the' manner in which the vessel was leaning against the rock. Although he could not see a hole because of the position of the ship, he felt certain there was one further forward through which the water found Its way inside. The result of the examinations led to the general opinion that the vessel could be easily floated off when the broken part was repaired.—Melbourne Argils.
