The usual monthly summary of the New ; Zealand Times, for transmission to England and America, by way of San Francisco, will’ bo published on Monday morning. The mailwill bo despatched per Phcebe on the following day, the mail closing at ten o’clock a.m. Sir Donald McLean, wo understand, is expected to return to Wellington in about a week.
Mr. R. Pharazyn last evening took his seat as a member of the Provincial Executive., The election of' John Ballance, Esq., to represent the district of Rangitikei in the House of Representatives, is officially announced in the Gazette of Thursday. Erom a return published in the Gazette of Thursday, we observe that the estates of nineteen persons who died intestate during the month of April have been placed in the care of the Public Trustee, Two of the deceased left £3OO each; four left sums of £2OO ; but one, a poor Chinaman, left only a poor one-pound note. Two of the intestates were drowned, one was killed by a fall from a horse, and three died in hospital. The Orchestral Society held an extra meeting last evening, at which many of the leading performers were present. The practice com- ; prised those pieces which it is proposed to give at the next concert, on the 13th instant. The result will be looked forward to with much interest. Considering the great energy displayed by the conductor, Mr. Currie, in the rehearsals, a very satisfactory performance may be expected. “ The Geneva Cross " was rehearsed yesterday, and will be again rehearsed to-day, at the Theatre Royal, but will not be produced before Monday evening. Mr. G. W. Collier plays an important part in the play, and cannot reach Wellington from Christchurch before Monday. Messrs. Thorp and Hesford fulfilled their engagements to the public very creditably at the Theatre Royal last night, on the occasion of their benefit, but we regretted to observe that there was but a poor house. “ Magic Toys " was the chief attraction at the Odd Fellows’ Hall last night, when the performances were for the benefit of the Sisters Huvalli. “Magic Toys" is known by those who have seen the Sisters before as one of the most attractive little pieces which they play, and it appeared greatly to please a numerous audience. To-night the sisters perform in Wellington for the last time. • Sub-Inspector Rohan, A.C., lately appointed as Adjutant in the Otago. district, arrived in town last night, and will shortly proceed to take command of his new district. Although there has been some disapproval heard as to his appointment, we are sure that those who knew him when in active service will agree that the Government have made a wise selection. An unfortunate result of an accident to a young immigrant, who only lately arrived in the. province, is reported by the Wanganui Chronicle , which says : —The young man named Jones, who was so severely injured by a fall of gravel at Marton, is being restored to convalescence by very slow and painful degrees. His back has been seriously, and, it is feared, permanently injured, and hia foot is still much swollen, not induced apparently by the compound fracture which his leg sustained so much as by some foreign and poisonous agency. As he. is just entering upon manhood his crippled condition and tedious recovery fyear very heavily upon him.
