TIMARU RACES.
[Press Agency.] Timaru, Thursday. The races to-day were not so good as last year's, but yet there was some very fine sport. The weather "was fine, and the attendance large. The results were:—
Hurdle Race.-—Mr P. Campbell's b. g. Tommy Dodd, aged, Ist; Mr. F. Hedge's b. g. Ivanhoe, aged, 12st. lib., 2nd. Alice. Grey and Medora were scratched. The first hurdle was taken tagether. Tommy Dodd then went away from Ivanhoe, and soon led by half a chain. After taking the fifth hurdle Ivanhoe went up to Tommy Dodd, but baulked at the sixth. Tommy went away and won as he liked. Time, linin. 47secs. Maiden Plate.—Mr. J. H. Lunn's b. m. Nectar, Ist. ; M. "W. Smith's b. g. Waverley, 2nd ; Mr. J. Barratt's b. g. Mignonette, 3rd. Mr. K. Stansell's b m. Golden Grape and Mr. H. Nicholson's Flora Mclvor also ran. Mr, S. Hoskins's Highland Lass threw her rider just before the start, and before the jockey was ready to mount the other horses went away. All the horses were on their feet well together, and the first to show her head was Flora Mclvor, who led half way round, when she was successfully passed by all the others, "Waverley taking the lead and makingthe pace exceedingly warm. Coming to the straight, Nectar, who was lying second, forged ahead of Waverley and won after a good tussle, a length ahead of Waverley ; Mignonette being two chains (?) in the rear, about a length ahead of Golden Grape, Flora being nowhere. Time, 2min. 49sec.
Tiniaru Cup.—Mr. Kay's b. c. Castaway, 4yrs., 9st., Ist; Mr. J. Haggle's ch. g. Exile, aged, Ost. Sib., 2nd; Mr. M. Barratt's ch. f. Mignonette, 4yrs., 9st. lib., 3rd. The race was looked upon, and proved to be, a gift to Castaway, which was backed at any odds. Exile took the lead when the three were despatched, but lie was soon outstripped by Castaway, which was never afterwards headed and won in a canter, six chains (?) in front of Exile, Mignonette being two lengths astern of Exile. Hack Race.—First heat- Mr. Barton's No Gentleman, Ist; Mr. F. Brown's Fan, 2nd. Second heatNo Gentleman, Ist; Mr. Cole's New Chum, 2nd. No Gentleman, therefore, was the winner. Ten horses ran.
Novel Race.—Mr. W. Smith's b. g. Wild Darrell, aged, Bst. 111 b., Ist; S. Hoskins's b g. Highland Lass, 3yrs., 7st. 121 b., 2nd. Wild Darrell took the lead soon after the flag fell, and at the back of the c®lirse was leading by a chain; coming into the straight Highland Lass improved the position, and 190yds. from the stand was within a length and a half of Darrell. She failed, however, to get any closer.
