WOOL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In a letter inserted in your yesterday's issue, anent the production of wool in the Kio Plata States, Mr. Samuel Kevans puts last year's production at 205 million pounds. He admits that, his statement Is imperfect. It is somewhat imperfect and erroneous. The clip of the year 1873-1871, shipped from the Kio Plata, was 1,200,000 arrobos, in about 200,000 bales. The arroba of wool at Buenos Ayres is 231bs. This gives 105 million pounds for the clip of 18731874 In September last it was estimated that there would be a deficit in the clip of 1874-1876 of from 15,000 to to 20,000 bales, and on January 14th last, when a somewhat reliable estimate' could be formed, tho Buenos jfym Standard announces that the clip would not exceed 180,000 bales. This, at tho average weight per bale of tho previous year, viz., 6251b5., would give a total for this last year's clip of 94 J million pounds, only about one-third of Mr. Revans's estimate. - It must be borne in mind, also, that tho quality of the wool, judging from the prices it realises in the continental markets, is too low to* enable it to enter into competition with colonial wool. It certainly does not compete very heavily in the English markets, for the total value of wool shipped from tho Rio Plata to English ports, of the dip of 1873-1874, was valued at £300,000 only, say about 11 million pounds out of the 339 million pounds of foreign and colonial wool imported last year.—l am, &c.
