Ran under mizzen to Otago Heads, where she anchored on Friday night. On Saturday morning, fearing to be swamped, she slipped her anchor and fifty fathoms of chain cable. Tried to make Oamaru but failed and came on north. Steered with difficulty into Timaru roadstead, having only ten fathoms of cable aboard. Borrowed gear from the Eliza McPhee and made snug. Refitting temporarily here, she will return to Port Chalmers. The brigantine Seagull, the arrival of •which has already been announced, left The Bluff with a cargo of timber for this port on the 23rd ultimo. Captain Yeal reports leaving The Bluff at 9 a.m. on the 23rd with a westerly wind ; rounded Waipapa Point at 1 p.m.; passed Nugget Point at 6 p.m.; at midnight rounded Cape Saunders. On the 24th had a strong S.W. gale, with passing showers; at noon the wind decreased, and the sea went down ; in the evening was abreast of Banks' Peninsula. From the 25th to the Ist May had light easterly winds, with high cross confused sea, which caused the vessel to labor and strain very much. At 6 a.m. on the Istinst. a breeze sprang up from the S.IY, which increased to a heavy gale ; at noon sighted Cape Campbell lighthouso. _ Tha increasing in force, double-reefed the mainsail and took in topgallant-sail and other light canvas; sighted the Heads at 4 p.m., and arrived in harbor and anchored off the wharf at 5.30 p.m., without the assistance of a pilot. Two youths having been missing for several days from the barque Light of the Age, every inquiry has been made as to their whereabouts, but at present with no success. Yesterday morning tbe police, accompanied by Mr. Smith, the first officer of the Light of the Age, proceeded to .the ship Dallam Tower, thinking that they might, perhaps, unearth the young foxes on board that ship. Search was made high and low for the supposed stowaways, but the party had to return without having found any traces of the youths. During the sudden squall on Sunday afternoon the Dallam Tower parted with an anchor and between five and six fathoms of chain. She drifted before the wind a considerable distance, but was eventually brought up by letting her second anchor down. The topsail schooner Elizabeth Curie arrived from Lyttelton on Sunday night, with a cargo of produce. The captain reports leaving the Heads at 8 a.m. on the Ist instant, the wind being light and southerly. On Sunday morning the wind blew from ■yV’.N.’VV.; in the afternoon it shifted to the S\V., and increased in force up to arrival in harbor. The Manawatu took her departure for Wanganui at 2 p.m. yesterday. She had a number of passengers and a general cargo. Tbe s.B. Eangatira left the wharf at 5 p.m. yesterday for Napier and Poverty Bay, with a large cargo and several passengers. Another distressing disaster at sea is reported, the barque Giovanni, from Palermo for Boston, _being wrecked at Highland Light, Massachusetts. Sixteen men perished within four hundred yards of the shore. —New York Herald, March C.
