Angus Boyd, a new arrival, pleaded guilty to the charge of imbibing too freely, and was fined 55., or in default twenty-four hours' unCharles TJpton, a harmless but old offender, was fined 205., with the alternative of fortyeight hours' imprisonment. , PCBLIC DOMAINS ACT. - John Nelson was charged with committing a breach of the above Act, by cutting a sapling growing in the Botanical Gardens. Mr. Bramley, custodian of the grounds, proved having found the prisoner committing the offence. „ , ~ , The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge, but hoped the Court would be lenient as he was not aware he was doing wrong. His "Worship said he would take a merciful view of the case and only fine him 10s. and Three seamen belonging to the Sunbeam, who had absented themselves without leave, were ordered to be sent on board. William Mauvis was charged with committing an assault on one Anne McDermott, on the 10th inst. . ■ „ c ,t Mr. Gordon Allan appeared on behalf of tlie defendant. . > , Anne McDermott deposed that she went to defendant's house on business, and she happened to laugh at some remark by the prisoner, when he struck her on the face and chest, inflicting severe bruises, the marks of which she still carried about her person. ■-,',. The prisoner admitted the charge, but pleaded great provocation in extenuation. He was fined 40s. and costs, or in default seven days'hard labor. William Baker was charged with_ committine an unprovoked assault upon David Corns, chief officer of the Sunbeam, by Btnkrng him unawares in the face. George Bunt was also charged with threatening the second officer, and "challenging him out to fight. Baker pleaded aggravation. Bunt said he had been drinking, and did not know what ho was ' °H?s Worship sentenced Baker to four weeks, with hard labor, and to pay all costs ; and Bunt to one week's imprisonment, and also to pay coßts. ' ' • VAGRANCY. Sarah Mitchell, an old offender, was brought up on remand since Monday last, on the above charge. . ■ . , , ._, Mr. White, a resident in Oriental Bay, stated he and his neighbors had been annoyed for the past week by a woman, believed to be the prisoner, and some men, who wore guilty of very disgraceful conduct. ' " ' His Worship said owing" to the' prisoner s identity not being "clearly established he would give her another chance,' and advised her to change her place of abode, which she promised to do.
