MASTERTON.
(from a correspondent.) The following address from the trustees of the Masterton town lands was presented to J. V. Smith, Esq., on the occasion of his leaving the district :—"Dear Sir, —We, the undersigned, teg to tender you our sincere goodwill and grateful acknowledgment of your past and valued services as chairman of trustees, in aiding and assisting us in our deliberations for the advancement and interests of Masterton ; and we also regret your resignation of that office and absence from amongst us, and sincerely trust that the time is not far distant when we shall again be favored with those services which we have good reason to value and appreciate, and remain, sir, yours, &c.— Henry Bannister, G. W. Woodroofe, R. G. Williams, W. E. Chamberlain." Mr. Smith returned the following reply : " Gentlemen,—l have received your address with unfeigned pleasure. I beg to assure you that the uniform courtesy and willing assistance which I always received from you made the duties to which you refer comparatively easy and pleasant; and I beg further to assure you that I hope for many years to come to maintain a close connection with the Masterton district, and shall always be glad if T can directly or indirectly promote its welfare.— I am, &c, J. Valentine Smith.—2sth April."
