by telegraph. FORT CHALMERS, Wednesday. Sailed : The s.s. Phcebe for Northern ports. LYTTELTON, Wednesday. Arrived : Warwick from Napier, yesterday. Cleared ; Ashburton, for Melbourne, with grain ; Adeline Burke, for Newcastle. The schooner Hunter sailed yesterday morning for Rangitikei, with about twenty tons of produce. • A slight northerly wind sprung up about midday yesterday, which enabled the following vessels, viz., the Carnatic and Australian Sovereign, besides several coasting craft, to up anchor and sail for their respective destinations. , c Mr. Jackson, stevedore, is • discharging the Sunbeam’s cargo in flrst-ratc order, not a package has, been found to bo damaged with salt water. This must be very satisfactory to the consignees who, although having to wait somewhat longer time than usual for their goods, have not incurred any loss, as is often the case, by the cargo getting damaged by the briny element. ' , . „ . . . The p.s. Manawatu, Captain Evans, arrived at the wharf yesterday, at 2.30 p.m., from Wanganui. She crossed the Wanganui bar at 0.30 yesterday morning, and experienced fine weather throughout the tpp. She towed the ship T. B. Taylor to sea on leaving Wanganui. The Cynthia sailed in ballast for the Kaipara last night. The barque Light of the Age will be discharged in a day or two; she will then sail for Newcastle. This is her first visit to this port; but she is well and favorably known in the Australian trade. She was launched at Sunderland about fourteen years ago, but was re-classed in last December, on her first letter, for eight years. To the observer’s eye, she has not the appearance of being a fast sailer, but we are informed that she has made as good runs as many of the clipper ships that trade to the Australias. She is commanded by Captain Alexander, well known in the Bristol trade, and her present crew have been in her for two years, which speaks well for the entente eordiale that exists between captain and crew. The steamers Egmont and Napier arrived from Foxton yesterday at a late hour.
