EDUCATION BOARD.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present—Mr. Brandon (Chairman), Mr. Toomath, Mr. Hutchison, Mr. Bunny, and the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn. THE BANK ACCOUNT. The Clerk said the bank account showed a balance of £BBll2s. lOd. to the credit of the Board. DUTIES OF MEMBERS. A motion relative to the remuneration to be paid to pupil teachers, and defining the duties of members of the Board, was postponed till next meeting. SECRETARY AND INSPECTOR. The Chairman’s motion for rescinding the former resolution of the Board relative to the amalgamation of the offices of Inspector and Secretary, was also postponed. THE NEW TE ARO SCHOOL. The Finance Committee reported that they had obtained an eligible site in Bucklestreet for the new Te Aro school. The position was stated to be very healthy, overlooking the cricket ground. The committee further reported that the erection of the school would be proceeded with as soon as the conveyance of the land was completed, a tender from Messrs. Halley and Ewing having been accepted. EDUCATIONAL RESERVES. Mr. Collis’s offer to lease two sections at Whiteman’s Valley, at £7 per annum, was accepted. ' MAUEICEVILLE SCHOOL. Mr. Peterson was appointed to the charge of the new school at Maurioeville, Scandinavian settlement. THE CITY ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS. The six months’ notice given to the teachers of the Eoman Catholic schools in Hill-street and Boulcott-street having expired, it was resolved that no alteration should take place at present. Mr. Toomath took the opportunity to express his opinion that it was extremely unfair to pay these teachers £2OO a-year, while the teacher of the Sydney-street school, who had four times the number of children committed to his care, only received £250. A proposal to abolish the two existing Eoman Catholic schools, and erect a larger school in a position intermediate between the present sites, was also discussed. The Secretary was instructed to make inquiries, and, if possible, to secure an eligible site for the erection of the amalgamated school. MISSING cheques. Some cheques having been lost, payment of which was stopped at the bank, the Secretary was authorised to issue fresh cheques, and advertise for the recovery of those missing.
KAIIWI SCHOOL. Upon the leading of a communication from the Kaiiwi Local Committee, it was agreed that the sum of £l2O should be expended by the Board upon the erection of a schoolhouse, upon the settlers contributing £3O. teacher’s residence, karori. The Secretary was instructed to obtain an estimate of the cost of the increased accommodation required for the teacher’s residence at Karori. CARTERTON. It was agreed that the necessary alterations to the teacher’s residence at Carterton, as ap- , proved by the local committee, be confirmed by the Board. , . PORIRUA FERRY. The question as to the best means of providing proper school accommodation and teacher’s residence at Porirua ferry, was referred to the local committee. A REQUEST PROS! WAIROA. Mr. G.j Bridge, of Wairoa, addressed the Board on the subject of increased school accommodation for the district. The communication set forth that the Town Hall, which was at present used as a school atra rental of £25 a year, was not suitable for the number of children in attendance, who were stated to average between 50 and 60. The Secretary was instructed to forward the necessary authority for the erection of a new school. SIGNING CHEQUES. The Secretary stated that in consequence of a letter received from Mr. Eairbrother, of Carterton, be had to ask whether the Board would have any objection to the Finance Committee signing cheques to the amount of any particular vote authorised. The object was to avoid difficulty with the contractors, who were compelled to wait for the sanction of the Board before receiving their money. Mr. Bunny and Mr. Hutchison saw no
objection to the Finance Committee signing cheques for work authorised by the Board. This view of the matter was adopted. OLUNIE-SOHOOL. Mr. A Cameron forwarded a tender for the erection of a schoolhouse at Clunie, Upper Turakiua Valley, to cost £9O, with lining, but without porch and chimney, and £l2l 13s. witli these additions. The latter offer was accepted. PEILDINO. Mr. A F. ITaloombe, chairman of the local committee at Feildiug, asked for assistance to the extent of £3O, in carrying out necessary improvements at the Feildiug school. The request was granted , KAIWAIWAI. The Kaiwaiwai Local Committee were also assisted to the extent of £SO. HILL-STREET SCHOOL. Mr. Nbwlyn, master of the Hill-street school, stated that since the resignation of Mr. Horan he had employed Mrs. Newlyn to teach the infant classes, and applied that the usual salary, £BO, ho allowed [to Mrs. Newlyn. Mr. Toomath said such an application could not he complied with until Mrs. Newlyn had passed an examination before the Inspector. The Inspector was instructed to report upon Mrs. Newlyn’s qualifications.
GLADSTONE, WAIKAEAPA. . The local committee of Gladstone, Te Purupuni, Wairarapa, inquired whether the £4O, which they were required to raise as a condition precedent to their receiving the £l5O voted by the Board, should be first paid into the bank and drawn upon, or be placed to their account when the £l5O was exhausted. The Board held that the £4O must be paid into the bank first. A question as to the supervision of the school was left in the hands of the local committee for decision. ANNUAL EEPOET. The annual report, prepared for presentation to the Provincial Council, was referred to a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs, Pharazyn, Brandon, and Toomath, for revision ; committee to meet on Priday, at eleven o’clock. GENEEAL SUBJECTS. The following suggestions were handed in by the Inspector : 1. That no school be opened at the Bonny Glen at present. 2. That Makirikiri school be made a fulltime school. 3. That Greatford school be re-opened. 4. That the proposed extension of the school at Bull’s be delayed. 5. That the proposed new school (No, 2) at Caernarvon be not continued at present. The discussion of the suggestions was delayed until next meeting.
