The steamer Rangatira, Captain Griffiths, arrived from Napier on Saturday morning last, after a passage of twenty-four hours. We are indebted to Mr Dougherty, purser, for the following report of the passage:—Left Napier at 11.30 a.m. on the 23rd ; experienced fine weather np to 2 a.m. of the morning of the 24th ; from that time till arrival had very thick weather, accompanied by a strong S.E. wind. The brig Alarm arrived from Lyttelton on Saturday with a cargo of grain. The Light of the Age, barque, Captain Alexander, arrived in harbor on Saturday night from New York, via Dunedin, with a cargo of yankee notions. The p.s. Manawatu arrived on Sunday morning from Wanganui. Captain Evans crossed the Wanganui bar at two p.m. on the 24th ; arrived in port at eight a.m. on Sunday. Experienced strong southerly winds and heavy seas throughout the passage. The s.s. Kangatira, from Napier, has brought a ■mall miscellaneous cargo. The brigantine Enterprise, Captain Campbell, took her departure for Wanganui on Saturday evening. The crew, prior to her departure, were bus> in sending up a new maintopmast, in lieu of the one which was carried away some time since. The brigantine Omaha arrived from Lyttelton on Saturday, with a general cargo. r . The s.s. TSgrnont arrived from 'Wanganui, at 9 a.m. yesterday. ' The clipper ship Carnatic cleared the Customs on Saturday, and it was the intention of the agents to have her towed out to sea by the s.s. Wellington, but in consequence of her taking the ground when attempting to haul off from the wharf, the idea was abandoned. She finally cleared away from the wharf early on Saturday morning, and dropped down to the anchorage, awaiting a change of wind. The Carnatic is in excellent trim, and, with ordinary luck, should make a good run Home. We wish the captain, officers, and paslengcrs bon voyage. We append a summary of her cargo viz., 600 tons grain, 1400 bales of wool, 50 bags of skins,-B(rtons of tallow, 169 cases preserved meats, and a quantity of hides. ...,,, , The schooner Kaiuma and the ketch Alert cleared out in ballast for Havelock on Saturday. We have been ldndly furnished with the following report of the pasßage of the barque Sunbeam, from London, by Captain Chapman .-—Left Gravesend on December 24, but .did not clear the Channel until January 1, in consequence of having thick weather to contend against. From the Ist to {he 17th January encountered a.succession of very strong S.W. gales. Sighted Madeira on the 24th. From that date until arrival fine weather was experienced. The Sunbeam has a large quantity of gunpowder on board, which will be discharged into the lighters early this morning. She is also the bearer of 200 packages of railway material, consigned to the Minister of Public Works. At a meeting of the directors of the New Zealand Steam Shipping Company, held on Saturday, the tenders for new boilers and other repairs to the s.s. Wellington were opened and considered. Each tenderer had to state both the price and the time required, first for the construction of the boilers, and secondly for the completion of the work after the steamer had been handed over to the contractors. The tender accepted was that of Messrs. Yeoman and Co., of Auckland, the price being£2Bßs, and the total time required eighteen weeks. The rejected tenders were—E. W. Mills, Wellington, price £2BIO, time, seven months; Kincaid and McQueen, Dunedin, £2718, and nineteen .weeks ; Eobertson and Co., Wellington, £3164, and six months; Fraser and Tinne, Auckland, £3445, and six months; 3. Anderson, Christchnrch, £SOOO, six and a-half months. The reasons which induced the acceptance of Messrs. Yeoman arid Co.'s tender in lieu of others which were lower were as follows:—lst. The time required was the shortest of any, a far more important point even than the price ; 2nd. The fact that the kauri timber required for new spars, deck, &c\, could be had on the spot in Auckland, thus saving the very heavy expense of carriage, which would have been unavoidable in the other cases; 3rd. The weather in Auckland at the. time the work would have to be clone is better than that in the other places; 4th. The successful tenderer already had done work for the company ih satisfactory style, e.g., the boiler for the p.s. Manawatu, Mr. E. W. Mills, of Wellington, and Messrs.- luncaid and McQueen, of Dunedin, were shut out by the length of time they required, as weU as by the above considerations, which rendered Messrs. Yeoman'B tender really by far the cheapest. New Observatory at Port Louis.—The adopted latitude of the new observatory at Pamplemousses, from which the time ball on the signal mountain at Port Louis Is dropped at 1 p.m., mean solar time, is 20* 6' 6" South ; and the adopted longitndo, 3b. 50' 12'6" East of Greenwich. New. Steamer, fob New Zealand.—The steam ship Hawea, with Captain E. Wheeler in command, left Glasgow for Port Chalmers on the Bth of the present month. Fitted as she is with the best compound engines, and being provided with 800 tons of the best Welsh coal, the steamer is expected to make a rapid passage. The other boat for the Union Company, the Taupo.was launched on the 24th of March, and will probably arrive a month after the Hawea. The Tanpo is commanded by Captain Macfarlane, who brought out the Bruce last year.
