Italy is the latest addition, to our'mercantile marine, having been recently purchased at Melbourne by Captain J. R. Gourlay, formerly of the barque Natal Queen. She is a fine substantial vessel, built on a good model, thoroughly equipped, and is especially well calculated for the China, Mauritius, or intercolonial trade. The vessel was built in 1867 at Cardiff, South -AVales, England, and is classed for thirteen years. The material used in her construction was the best of timber, and her bottom was sheathed with pure copper. She measures. 125 feet , in length, 20 feet beam, 13 feet depth of hold, and has a draught of water of 18 feet; and will easily carry 410 tons of coat She possesses excellent cabin accommodation, and the fittings throughout are in keeping with the style of the vessel. The vessel was formerly owned by Air. Payne, of Shoreham, England, from whom Captain Gourlay purchased her for the sum of £3 10s. Since, being built the Italy has been engaged in the China trade, and obtained a reputation for making good passages. AVhile in Alelbourne the vessel lias been docked and passed her half-time survey. On that occasion her timbers were found to be as sound as on the day she was built. ; Since then she has been to Hobarton, thence to Newcastle, and was then chartered to load coal for Lyttelton.— Lyttelton Times, April 19.
