AMATEURS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,' —In your notice of the porforiuance of " Macbeth "by the Bates Company on Saturday night, last ■ you pass a severe stricture upon some auiateurswhohad promised to assist in the orchestra, and who " failed to redeem their pledge." You ask ""Where were the amateurs?" I would ask, Who were they? I venture to say, imaginary people ; for, with one exception, I cannot find an amateur in Wellington who had the slightest idea of playing in the theatre on Saturday night. Who has so misled both Mr- Bates and yourself of course I cannot say; but whoever it was, his conduct was most reprehensible. I hope you will insert this letter in justice to the amateurs, of whom I am pleased to say I am— One. Wellington, April ?0. (If "One" is correct, then Mr. Bates was grossly deceived by some •• one."—Ed. w.Z.T. J
