[Per Press Agency.] Wanganui, Tuesday. Mr. Ballauce addressed the electors at Turakina last night. The attendance was good. He touched on most of the principal topics of the day, and in conclusion received a vote of thanks and confidence, on the motion of Mr. A. Simpson. Auckland, Tuesday. The agricultural statistics for the province of Auckland have been published. The total area under crop, including artificial grasses, is 268,657 acres. The increase on last year is 41,177 acres. The area under grass is 254,560 acres. The nomination took place to-day for the election of a member of the Provincial Council for the City East. Mr. W. L. Rees, barrister, and Mr. George Holdship, timber merchant, were candidates. Mr. Pees made a telling speech, admitting that the principal object for his wishing to get in was that he might contest the seat for the City West in the General Assembly with Mr. “Vogel at the next election. The show of hands was :—Rees, 50 ; Holdship, 38. . Grahamstown, Tuseday. Thomas Edwards, on remand, was to-day charged with shooting with intent to murder one John Toovey. Evidence was taken at length. The medical testimony was to the effect that Toovey was suffering from shot wounds below the knee. The accused made a long statement, admitting the offence. He said the prosecutor had three or four times seduced his wife from home, disgraced him and his children, and rendered his life miserable, besides ruining his prospects. He had, therefore, determined to be revenged. He did not intend to kill Toovey, but to cripple him. Accused was committed for trial. Commiseration was expressed for the prisoner, who is a hard-working man, and it is believed had grounds for his feelings against Toovey. The survey of the road from Shorthand to Tairua is to be undertaken at once. The Bright Smile are knocking off hands and stopping their battery, owing to the shortness of water, Dunedin, Tuesday. A man named Walter Wright, a baker, attempted to commit suicide to-day. The doctors pronounce him insane. He was taken to the Asylum. One of the principal drapers here has been summoned by his machinist for a contravention of Bradshaw’s Eemale Employment Act. Three charges are laid. The police are taking ricid measures to carry out the Act. The police v. Dodson re Monster Derby Sweep on the Dunedin Cup, was adjourned till to-morrow. Christchurch, Tuesday. By the last mail nominations were forwarded . through the Immigration Office for 127 statute adults, by their friends in this province. The land sales yesterday amounted to 1323 acres, realising £2646. A meeting of the Board of the Canterbury College was held yesterday. Professor Bickerston has been appointed local analyst under the Adulteration of Pood Act. Tenders have been accepted, nearly to the extent of £14,000, for additions to the Museum. The general entries for the Autumn Race Meeting close to-morrow. Blenheim, Tuesday. A man named William Macdonald committed suicide on Sunday, at Blenheim lockup, by strangling himself with a leather strap, which he fastened round his throat and tied to the toe of his left foot. He was iu custody on a charge of attempting to destroy himself; An inquest was held last evening, when a verdict of suicide, while laboring under mental aberration, was returned. Hokitika, Tuesday. Dr. Redwood, Roman Catholic Bishop, arrived per Wallace at 3 o’clock p.m. , A large procession, headed by the band, met him on landing. He proceeded to St. Mary’s Church, where he was presented with an address of welcome.
