A couiiESPONDENT writes ;—“ It is rather singular that at the very time your article appears relative to the demands made on Provincial Governments by Municipal Councils, I should find the only places in which the dog-tax is levied in this province are Wellington and Wanganui. There cannot be a doubt that in this province the tax should be municipal and not provincial revenue. If you read the Act, it was plainly the intention of the framers that the taxshould bo a protection in a way to owners of sheep, pigs, poultry, &c.; yet in the Hutt and Wairarapa the tax is not enforced,” We find that the following sums were paid into the
Wellington Provincial Treasury for dog registration during the year 1574 : —Wellington (city), £B9 10s. ; Wanganui, £57 ss. Total, £146 15s. Curiously enough, yesterday not fewer than fifty persons were summoned to the Resident Magistrate’s Court for non-payment of the dog-tax, and fined.
