QUEEN’S WHARF.
Sir, —I was much astonished by the report of the proceedings of the City Council that amongst other objections Mr. Jackson, the present lessee of the wharf, made was what he termed “ sharp practice,” by demanding his month’s rent in advance, in comformity with the conditions of sale. Now, Sir, I considered this rather stringent myself by the City Council, but when there was no help for it I submitted as well as others. Had this not been the case, I myself, and I also know others, who would have been bidders at the sale at a very considerable advance upon the price obtained. The great difficulty which we all experienced was the finding cash for at least one thousand pounds, the amount we estimated requisite, as our business would not allow such a draw, but had we been placed in the same position as Mr. Jackson, with a month’s credit, there would not have been the slightest obstacle in carrying out our purposes, as most ample security was procurable. I think that if any one has room for complaint it is myself and family, being very old settlers, and accustomed to this kind of business for many years, and having the practical working within ourselves, and being economical, could compete cheaper than a new and inexperienced hand. I consider the. Corporation have gone on a false basis from the commencement, and their affairs will always be liable to be mismanaged until they adopt the plan which is done in my native town of making it imperative that the Town Clerk should be a lawyer.—l am, &c., Ratepayer.
