New Zealand Times. THURSDAY, APRIL 1, 1575.
We are informed that the Government does not intend to fill up at once the office of Attorney-General, vacated by the promotion of Mr. Pbendergast. The office is one not easy to fill up satisfactorily, and all the circumstances surrounding it require consideration. Mr. Reid, the Assistant law-officer, has been temporarily appointed Solicitor-General. Thisappointment will give him power to do all the duties that fall upon the Attorney-General, when such an officer is appointed. The care and ability with which Mr. Reid has transacted all the business intrusted to liini, are a guarantee for tbe successful conduct of the legal business of the Government until more permanent arrangements are made. Probably the Government will have to obtain assistance from outside for Bill drafting, and in the meantime a young barrister, Mr. Govktt, has been temporarily employed in Mr. Reid’s office, to assist in the routine work of the department.
