[Per Press Agency.] Auckland, Tuesday.. There wag a fire at Woodside to-day, which destroyed Callan’s six-roomed house. JCt was insured in the Norwich Union for £125. The fire is supposed to have been communicated from a clump burning in the tea-tree near. It is believed to have been purely accidental. Judge Gillies arrived per Ladybird to-day. The criminal calendar comprises thirteen cases —none of them very serious. Grahamstown, Tuesday. At the inquest on the body of William Booker, drowned at Ohinemuri,'the jury returned a verdict of “ Pound drowned.” The body was brought down last night for burial. Alexandra, Tuesday. The native meeting at Kuiti is so far a failure, Tawhiao not having returned from Kawhia. Great disgust is felt by those present, and many are leaving. A number of natives came down to-day from Kopua with wheat, realising ss. 6d. per bushel. Napier, Tuesday. There is much sickness here, and several cases of typoid fever are reported. Uf. Gibbes publishes a letter to-day in the Havikisßay Herald on the subject and the want of hospital accommodation. Urgent coses are refused on the ground of there being no room. Alterations are much wanted. The Local Board of Health is going to take the matter up. William Gainey, charged three years ago with setting fire to the Poresters’ Arms Hotel, was brought up to-day for throwing a stone through the window of the Bank of New Zealand, apparently with the object of being sent to gaol He was remanded till Thursday. The Colonial Bank is going to open, a branch here. New premises are about to be erected in Hastings-street from designs by Mr. Ben Smith. It will be a neat and appropriate building. The new bank promises to have a good share of support here. Nelson, Tuesday. The Volunteers returned to town last night. Captain Pearce addressed the Nelson men, and thanked them for the kind reception they had given to the Wellington Volunteers. He believed their visit to Nelson would do them all much good. The Wellington men left in the Phcebe at 2.15 p.m. A detachment of the Nelson Artillery and the Band accompanied them to the steamer, where cheers were exchanged ; and as the steamer left the Baud struck up “ Auld Lang Syne.” Christchurch, Tuesday. The theatrical costume cricket match yesterday was very, successful.. The dresses were good, and the play was very amusing. There was a large attendance, but owing to the law not permitting a charge to be made for admission to the cricket ground, which is public property, only £3O was received in voluntary contributions at the gates. The annual Kifle Association’s meeting yesterday passed off successfully. The principal prize, £SO challenge cup, seven shots at 200, 500, and 600 yards, was won by Sergeant Beattie, Engineers, with 63 points. Hokitika, Tuesday. The races yesterday were postponed on account of the weather. The town is crowded with country visitors. Dunedin, Tuesday. Easter Monday was not observed as a general'holiday, but a large number of business places were closed. The Caledonian sports were very successful. The wrestling match between Kobertson and Tyson, for £SO and the champion belt, value £25, was postponed in consequence of an injury to Tyson’s knee. The settling on the races was fairly satisfactory. Mr. Uelamain takes over £9OO in stakes. Judge Chapman sits on the bench for the last time to-morrow. He will make a farewell address to the Bar.
