WANT OF HARBOR ACCOMMODATION.
Sib, —We, the' undersigned, masters and owners of coasting vessels frequenting this port, request that you wiU permit us, through the medium of your paper, to call the attention of the harbor authorities, whoever they may be, to the urgent necessity of providing some better and more trustworthy accommodation for the vessels which are now compelled, by overcrowding at the wharf and other circumstances, to avail themselves of such accommodation os now offers at the breastwork at the reclaimel land. We have been informed that in course of time a landing-stage is to be run along the said breastwork, but in the meanwhile, after the experience of the effects of the late gale, no master can consider his vessel safely moored while lying in that place; besides the great risk, the wear ,to the lines is something enormous, as at present there are no proper posts to moor a vessel to, and we have to make shift with anything that offers to make our vessels fast to. We would, therefore, respectfully suggest that until such time as the landing-stage above mentioned is completed, some temporary arrangement be made—in the way of fixing in some trustworthy mooring posts, at convenient intervals, along the quay, as also sufficient and efficient fender piles, to prevent vessels chafing against the bolts, which now project beyond the stringer along the seawall, and are at all times liable to inflict serious damage to vessels lying alongside.:' Trusting that our request, being but reasonable and just, will meet'with speedy attention from the authorities interested in the : welfare of this port,—We are, &c., t ; Fred.
