ARRIVAL, OF THE ALHAMBRA. [Per Press Agency.] Hokitika, Tuesday. The s.s. Alhambra, Captain Sinclair, arrived off port this morning from Melbourne, was tendered, and proceeded on her voyage northwards. Left Melbourne on this day week, and had variable weather across. She passed the Albion at 6.30 a.ra. on the 21st. Passengers for Wellington—Mr. and .Mrs. White, Mr. and Mrs. Stay and family, Messrs. Neal and Harrison ; and she has 140 tons of cargo. The Alhambra brings the following news : [Reuter's Telegrams.] London, March 13. John Mitchell has been re-elected by an overwhelming majority for Tipperary. At the wool sales, prices continue firm. The corn market is shaky. An interview between the sovereigns of Austria and Italy takes place in April. Arrived : Halcione, from New Zealand. March 16. The firm of John C. Thorn and Co., merchants, of East India Avenue, Leadenhallstreet, have suspended payment. The lowest estimate fixes their liabilities at two millions sterling. Paris, March 13. Buffet has declared the policy of the new Ministry to be Conservative, without vindictiveness. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. VICTORIA. Melbourne, March 17. The political atmosphere still continues calm and unchanged. From a few words of the Premier to his constituents it seems likely Government will early next session proceed to a further adjustment of the incidence of taxation ( by relieving a number of articles included in the present tariff. • There are two elections pending, one for the Upper and the other for the Lower House. Nothing more is likely to be heard of the missing boats from the Gothenburg, and the number of survivors still remains at twenty - two. ! A full account received gives the particulars of the unfortunate wreck up to the last moment. The weather was favorable when the vessel struck, and hopes were felt that she would be got off in the morning. During this false security a heavy storm arose, and people were literally washed off -the steamer, and unable to use the boats. All died calmly, and met their death with resignation and intrepidity. The relief fund in Melbourne amounts to about £ISOO, and in Adelaide to £2500.

Bishop K. Crane, R.C.-Bishop of Sandhurst, comes out by the Californian mail steamer.
A prodamati n is issued, extending the prohibition against the importation of live atook to 30th June, 1876. Blondin proceeds to England by the mail. He returns next Christmas.
Following doso upon the Gothenburg’s wreck, news was received of the total wreck of the Grafton steamer Helen Macgregor, at Clarence Heads, bound to Sydney, with the loss of eight lives. The vessel was fully insured.
The New Zealand marls Lnrline and Calumny have taken the principal prizes at the Autumn Eace Meeting. Lurline wOn the Australian Cup, beating a large field, including Tail’s pair ; aid Calumny won the Newmarket Handicap, beating sixteen others. Calumny also won the Brunswick Stakes. Melbourne won the Leger. Sydney won the cricket match with Victoria by 77 runs. Two miners were killed by a fall of earth in the Eacecourse claim at Haddon..

NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, March 17. Sir Alfred Stephen is appointed a member of the Upper House. The wrecks are announced of the brig Annie Ogle, and schooners Europe and Minora, during late gales, with loss of life. Parliament re-assembles on the 23rd.
