[Per Press Agency.] Auckland, Tuesday. An extraordinary boiler accident has just occurred at Lamb's firewood yard, Upper Queen-street. A boiler, weighing half a ton, exploded, and was driven through the roof of a stable, then passed through the upper storey the house of Hayward, mattress-maker, passing Mrs. Hayward within a yard, driving the furniture through the window ; lastly, it crossed the road, and fell without injuring any one. It has been resolved by the Harbor Board to invite tenders for the balance of the Dock Loan at six per cent. The National Bank announce that the system of local directors in each place will be discontinued. Alexandra, Tuesday. Great preparations are being made for the meeting at Kuiti, on the 28th. Rewi’s people have already 100 pigs potted. Tawhiao has returned to Kawhia. Dunedin, Tuesday. The last of the correspondence as to Dunedin and Peninsula and Ocean Beach Railway was published, this morning. It is a letter from B. 0. Haggitt, Crown Solicitor, stating that as the company had constructed works on land of the Crown below high-water mark, the Attorney-General will commence legal proceedings if any attempt is made to re-com-mence or use such works.
■. ■ DUNEDIN RACES. ; Dunedin, Tuesday. . The races commenced to-day. The town was crowded with people from the country who had come in to see the sports. It rained hard last night, and the weather was very cold and unpleasant, with prospects of rain. Pertobe was sold yesterday, with all engagements, for a hundred and fifty-five guineas. The races began with • THE MAIDEN PLATE, which resulted in a splendid race. King Philip had a bad start, but won by a neck. He could have won by any distance he liked, as he came in hands down. Hercules was second, and Daniel O’Rorke third. DUNEDIN COP.
Traitor was very much fancied on the course, but ran a bad third. Ngaro, the favorite in the betting, came in last. 1 Castaway fell into the ditch, and was out of the race. The Earl of Lynne' disappointed his backers. Hercules made tho running from the start for Templeton, who came up in splendid style, and won easily. The order at the start was :—Templeton, Bight Bower, Traitor, Atlas, Hercules Earl of Lynne, and Ngaro, Those scratched were Pertobe, Tripoli’s, and Spritsail. Just before tho start, Ngaro was first favorite, Templeton next in the betting, and Traitor third. Templeton was in the best condition of any horse in the race. A heavy squall took place while the race for tho Cup was being run. Time, Imin. lOJsec. NEWMARKET STAKES. Woe Lad and the Tadmor colt were scratched. Elfin King made the running, and won, close pressed by Spritsail, who was second, with Bothwell third. Sonambula made a bad start. publican's handicap. Templeton and Tadmor were the favorites. Barwon led at the start, but was soon collared by Templeton, who won easily. King Philip was second, and Tadmor third. Spritsail, Pertobe, Verbena, aud Hercules were scratched. Templeton and his owner, Mr. Delamaine, were loudly cheered after both the Cup aud Publican’s Handicap races.
