The steamer Phoebe, for Picton, Nelson, Taranaki, and Manukau. sailed at 2.30 yesterday afternoon. The Rangatira, Captain Griffiths, sailed last evening for Napier and Poverty Bay, with a full cargo of general merchandise, and a number of passengers. The ship Dallam Tower commenced the discharge of her cargo yesterday morning. if*he steamer Napier was hauled high and dry on the Patent Slip yesterday, to receive a new screw and fixings to her rudder. She is expected to steam round from Evans Bay this morning, and take in cargo for Wanganui, leaving in the evening. ■ The steamer Taranaki, Captain Lloyd, arrived early yesterday morning from Manukau, Taranaki, Nelson, and Picton. From Manukau to Taranaki the weather was favorable; but from New Plymouth to Nelson the steamer encountered the -full strength of the gale which prevailed on the west coast o f the North Island on Friday and "Saturday last. She made for Croixelles harbo*, but the weather was too thick for the Taranaki; to enter with safety, and Captain Lloyd steered for shelter .under the lee of D’Urville’s , Island, anchoring in the vicinity 4i the French Pass. When the gale was at its. height, shortly after the Taranaki.left New. Plymouth, Captain Lloyd endeavored to take in the iforctopsajil, and whilst the , crew were reefing it, the truss of the foreyard' was carried away. The men, fortunately, were not hurt. Immediately afterwards, the fbretrysaiVbobm started the guy, and the boom was thus entirely at the mercy of the gale, the result being the snapping of the topping-lift and the loss of the canvas. A lifeboat was also much damaged by the foretrysaU * boom. After lying at anchor for seven hours, the steamer once more entered Blind Bay, and reached Nelson in safety. From Nelson, which the Taranaki left'at eight o'clock on Sunday morning* to Picton,. and * from Picton to Wellington, moderate weather was experienced. Taranaki left for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers at five’ o’clock yesterday afternoon; with a small cargo, but a large number of passengers, including 109 immigrants for Otago, who; arrived by the Dallam Tower/ ... s The barque ‘Australind, Captain Rogers, beat into iiarbor yesterday afternoon against a strong N.W, wind, and anchored off the wharf at half-past six last evening. She left Newcastle on the llth instant, with 740 tons of coal, consigned to her owner, Captain' Williams. ■ - r V : The barque Anne Melhuish was berthed at the outer T yesterday, afternoon. , The barque Antipodes, Captain Henry Patching, left Bnnbury, W.A., on February 6th. Experienced S.E. gales, and had to run into Geographe Bay for shelter; finally took departure from Cape Naturalist on the following Thursday, February llth ; ran from thence to 45 S..with easterly winds, and then a strong westerly breeze prevailed till rounding S.W. Cape on Tuesday morning last, at two p,m. - Northerly winds and variables and thick weather prevailed until Saturday evening last, when a"S.S,B. breeze, sprang up. Sighted the peninsula at daylight on Sunday morning,: and anchored at Port Lyttelton at five p.nf. Passed a large full-rigged ship on Sunday, bound North. There were no vessels’ on the. berth for New Zealand at Banbury, but scveTalv'esselswere loading at the Vasse; Captain Patching was not aware, however, of their destination.rr Canterbury Press, March IC.
