MR. HYDES AND NAPIER CRITICS.
TO ‘THU EDITOR. Sm,—l perceive, a'letter: taken from your; issue of" ~ the Oth hist.,' in -the Hamtee's Say Herald, signed J. P. Hydes, Stage Manager Bates Dramatic Company, I ' must indeed say that there is a great deal of truth, contained in that gentleman’s letter. The realty good pieces put upon the stage here were not appreciated at all, simply because, as that gentleman justly remarks, they “couldn’t see it.” -Such . pieces as “Elisabeth” and “Camille" should have brought down tiie house, especially when they were under the splendid management of .Mr, and Mrs. Bates, Miss Haymond, and the Bates Dramatic Company, for I believe that actors ; and actresses like the above, never before trod'a New- Zealand stage. jy I cannot understand what the correspondent of aitevening paper means by calling Mr. Hydes’ letter, “a mixture of impertinence and bad taste.” There are ' a great many gentlemen in New Zealand who are not disgusted with Mr. Hydes’ letter, but, on the contrary, - .. fully coincide with him, and more so. appreciato that , gentleman as a highly talented and efficient actor. In conclusion, with every, good wish for Uie Bates Dramatic Company, and that they may do wcllwherecver they go.—l am, Ac., A Playgoer from Home. ■■ Napier, March 13. ,
