[P£B Press Agency.] , Auckland, Monday. An immigrant by the Baron Aberdave was brought np at the Police Court to-day, charged with stealing a dog and rug from the Cosmopolitan Hotel. He was arrested five hours after landing. Ten recently arrived immigrants by various ships were looked up on Saturday night on ■charges of.drunkenness and larceny. ‘ Tenders for the Auckland Waterworks were opened at the City Council to-day. Eight tendajfl were received, ranging from £75,663, inclusive of tramway, to £94,672. ■ F. and S. Moi-rin’s tender was. the lowest, and was accepted. .: : : '' <! . The steamer Wellington . is detained till to-morrow. . - - - Grahamstown, Monday. The Queen of Beauty claim banked on Saturday ' night ' 878ozs. for a fortnight’s yield. The City of Loudon, for its three weeks run, banked 8530z5. The Golden Calf have fine specimens from a new reef,' believed to be the No. "1. Caledonian. "• Tauranga, Monday. The whole telegraph staff are down with measles. The office was closed till twelve o’clock to-day, .when Mr. Hill arrived from Maketn to take charge. Measles are spreading rapidly in this district. i ■ Wanganui, Monday. A petition praying for the removal of Major Edwards, E.M., has been started, and is likely to be largely signed. It sets forth that Major Edwards was appointed temporarily, and that the office has been allowed to become permanent. ‘Complaint was made of the unsatisfactory manner in which Justice had been administered, anc] the appointment of a qualified officer was asked for. . “ The Hcmld, in supporting the petition, says that less important places have a district court, and that Wanganui is entitled to have .a magistrate capable of performing both duties. Mr. Ballance has Just returned from a canvass in Rangitikei. He has received large promises of support from all parts of the district, and will probably have a large majority. But little faith is placed in the sincerity of Mr. Watts’s action in resigning his seat in the Executive. The weather has changed to fair. Napier, Monday. . Messrs. Iloutledge, Kennedy and Co., sold at Shamrock, on Saturday, the thorough-bred horse Sator, recently imported to Wellington by Mr. L. Evans, for £1574, the highest price ever icaliaed in Hawke’s Bay. There is little
demand for draught stock. A few have been sold at from £3O to £45. Lord Lome, a Clydesdale stallion, now in Canterbury, fetched £4OO. Twenty-four unbroken light horses fetched from £3 15s. to £l2. A few good hacks brought from £l2 to £2l. Sir. Warren, of the Colonial Bank, was a passenger overland. He comes up to start a branch here, if sufficient'inducement offers. .• A cricket match-was played to-day between a local team and an eleven from Taupo. A dinner ■will be given to the Taupo men tomorrow: A report has reached here, on good authority, that Mr. Sheehan is going to resign the office of Provincial Secretary for Auckland, and intends to reside here as lawyer for certain natives in the Heretaunga block case, and to be a sort of legal father to the Maoris in the ■ H. R. Russell interest. Blenheim, Monday. A case in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, created great interest. Mr. Barleyman, Collector of Customs, was fined five shillings and costs of court, for assaulting Mr. John Bagge, formerly postmaster at Blenheim. The circumstances were these: —Bagge was carrying an unloaded gun, and Barleyman asked him to point it another way.. Bagge put the gun on his shoulder, the muzzle pointing towards Barleyman, who knocked the gun on the ground with his stick, also inflicting a blow on Bagge’s cheek. Christchurch, Monday. Mr. W, Mills, Collector of Customs, being about to retire from the service, was presented on Saturday with a gold-headed cane and a gold albert chain with masonic pendant, by the officials of his department. The only candidate announced, besides O’Brien, the chimneysweep, for- the vacancy in the City Council, is Wilhelm Schmidt, an hotel keeper. Dunedin, Monday, The result of the match was :—South Canterbury, first innings, 104 ; Otago", first innings, 186. South Canterbury, second innings, 161 ; Otago, second innings, 31, for three wickets down. A large fire occurred at Oamaru The New Zealand Insurance Company are involved to the extent of £3900 ; the Royal, £BOO ; Norwich Union, £250 £2OO. Total value upwards of £6OOO. The Cromwell* Company, Bendigo, turned out a 1200-ounce cake last week. New rich reefs have been discovered in the neighborhood. A violent gale blew yesterday, but there was little rain. Water is running very short. Invercargill, Monday. A heavy south-westerly gale prevailed throughout the entire.day yesterday.. A brick wall, at ■ the rear of Rodgers’s new building was blown -down. 1 Several jfences • werelevelled. No serious damage was occasioned. Mr. Armstrong, Messrs. Brogden’s manager here, who has been appointed to manage the Otago railways, was presented, on Saturday evening, byf Messrs. Brogden’s Employes with a ffold watch and a nurse of sovereigns.
