THE VOLUNTEERS.
(From the Wanganui Evening Herald, ' March 13.) The return match between the Wanganui Rifles and the Dunedin City Guards, this morning, did not come to any satisfactory conclusion, owing to our team not being got together, only six out of ten appearing on the ground. These fired, and made the very satisfactory average of 46, being a point below that made in the first match. Private Purnell, however, made the most extraordinary score of 58 out of a possible 60, a score that has to our knowledge never been equalled with a large bore rifle. The following are the scores made ;
200 600 GOO Tl. .. 20 — 19 — 19 68 ... 17 — 19 — 15 61 .. 19— 19 — 10 48 Soinmerville .. 20 — 15 — 9 44 .. ,20 — 15 — 8 43 Barr .. 18— 14 — 0 32 114 101 Cl 270 Average 43.
