PAHAUTANUI.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) March 18th. According to advertisement, the Pahautanui races and rural sports came off on Wednesday last. The weather was all that could be desired, the day being beautifully fine and clear, with a gentle north-west breeze blowing. There was a numerous attendance of the settlers from the surrounding districts, and if it had been a public holiday no doubt there would have been a greater number of visitors from Wellington than there was. W. Lowes, Esq., officiated as judge on the occasion, to the satisfaction of all parties concerned. Mr. Brandon, another of our representatives in the Council, was present at the races. The racecourse is laid out on a sandy flat, which has reclaimed itself, at the end of the bay. It was iu tolerably good order, but could be very much improved. I understand it has been reserved by the Government for a public recreation ground, and if the conveyance were made to proper trustees, I have no doubt steps would be taken to improve it before the next race meeting takes place. Some very good horses were put on the course, aud all the races were well contested, especially the one for the Pahautanui Stakes, in which Mr. Whitehouse's and Mr. Bromley's horses ran neck and neck round the whole of the course, and upon their arrival at the winning post the judge declared it to be a dead heat. The race was ultimately won by Mr. Whitehouse's horse. The sum of £BO (including entrances) was the amount altogether subscribed.
